If I take a 6 pack from a liquor store without them knowing is it still illegal?
Sure is. But as someone who manages a liquor store, unless we catch you in the act you're probably getting off scot-free unless you're known to the police.
If true, this is worse for the NFL than NOLA's bounty deal.
Enjoy your year away from the game, Bill.
Not to diminish the seriousness of the Patriots getting caught cheating... But there's certainly a difference between this and a team's coaches being complacent in overt attempts to injure players.

It's sad because the Patriots don't have to do this in order to win.
Belichick is probably the best coach in the game. New England was winning that game against the Colts no matter what.
Why be shady like this when you are already better than everyone and don't have to? The risk of getting caught just isn't worth it when you don't need the competitive advantage.
Screw the Patriots. Disgusting organization.

You know if I was a Broncos fan, I wouldn't be talking about the Patriots being cheaters considering the Broncos are the only franchise in the history of the league to be caught circumventing the salary cap. That's real cheating right there.

Let's be realistic- this is a bad situation for the Pats, but it is probably on par with other infractions such as salary cap violations, illegal stick curves in hockey, illegal athletic equipment etc. It is wrong and should be penalized accordingly.
edit- the rule book calls for a fine of $25,000 if it is discovered that a ball has been tampered with. It appears 11 balls may have been tampered with, so wouldn't be surprised if the Pats are just fined $275,000. Perhaps Belichick may be personally fined as well.

For Spygate they lost a 1st rounder (31st overall), the team fined $250k, and Belichick fined 500k. Does it deserve more or less the same as the previous one? Since this is the same management group as spygate does it need to be escalated?
A fine is a drop in the bucket for the pats organization so maybe the loss of the draft pick is the way to go.
If the information in there is correct that the league was planning to inspect the balls again at halftime ahead of the game then this is far more serious than the articles I read earlier led me to believe. If that is the case (why wouldn't it be) then it does not appear to be error on the part of the referees as I was thinking, but an incident to me that is worse than 'Spygate'.
If the NFL finds the Patriots guilty in this then they should suspend Brady. He's the one who is ultimately behind the decision, not Belichick, although BB would have to give his ok to it too.
^^^^ Ok, if the NFL made it clear in the rules that the penalty for this violation is $25,000, why would they suspend Brady?
Say what you will about Seahawks fans, but I guarantee none of them would want to win the Super Bowl that way.
Suspending Brady is unrealistic and would never happen. But if they are going to potentially fine Belichick (I don't think that is out of the realm of possibility despite what the rules say), I would think Brady may not escape all punishment. A small fine would suffice. That said, I'm still not convinced there will be punishment and am waiting for what the NFL has to say
