Eh I buy most cereals/dry good/tins at Superstore because they are far cheaper than the rest. There are times of day that are much less chaotic and ridiculous than others however. I have the luxury of working from home every few weeks, so I usually take a lunch hour to go shop with the stay at home moms and grandmas. Going after work, or on a weekend is a gongshow however.
I usually pick up produce from Sobey's and meat from the butcher however.

They must be much nicer on the East Coast because I grocery shop almost exclusively at SuperStore. It's big, clean, lots of selection, I love PC products, staff is friendly, and unless it's like Saturday afternoon there aren't huge lines and if there are they open all the registers.
Perhaps it's easier to find competent managers out here? I dunno.
I find Sobey's here (which there are many more of, understandably) are generally smaller, and there's something about Our Compliments that doesn't do it for me.
No Frills (do you guys have those) are cheap and quick but I'll pick up my favourite battery acid like No Name Grapefruit Juice there (I love the stuff, only person I know who does).
That said, Boo Target, Boo

Eastern superstores are completely different, went to the Halifax one and it was if I walked into a fully renovated Safeway. Much nicer than our chaotic mess that is superstore.

What's everyone's guess as to what will happen to all the spots in Calgary where Target was?

It wouldn't surprise me to see SportChek look at that location for an Atmosphere SportChek combo. The location they have in Chinook right now is terrible.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a higher end retailer take over the Market Mall location. Maybe something like Nordstrom. With Simon's setting up a store in downtown Calgary they might be suitor for Chinook or Market Mall as well.

This was my first thought when I heard about the closedown. Obviously I'm biased, but I think it would be a huge mistake if they didn't do everything possible to get that space. After what's been done to the West Ed and Metro Flagship locations, I can only imagine what could be done in 115k sq ft at Chinook, one of the most premium malls in the country.

I'm hoping for Simon's to come to Chinook or Market Mall, but I doubt it'll happen - all the Simon's stores I've been to have been absolutely massive and I don't think Target's space is big enough at either mall for them (or Nordstrom).

Is the downtown location for the new Simon's going to be bigger than either Target store at Chinook or Market Mall? I've never actually been to Simon's but my significant other visits the West Ed store whenever we are in the area.

The only thing sticking in my mind is that it wouldn't go for a flagship treatment until 2016 at the earliest, same as Robson.
2015 is all dedicated to GTA for the Flagship program.

From what I can understand, the downtown one is going to be 3 levels so I anticipate it's going to be a good size. Unless Simon's did a smaller-concept store by leaving out their home section, I can't see the Target spaces being big enough based on the average size of their stores I've been to in Quebec and Edmonton. To be honest, if they did put a smaller store in, I'd probably be disappointed because the amount of selection is what I love about Simon's. I can always spend a good two hours in the Edmonton store just shopping the women's section and I usually leave with a good haul for a decent price.

FORTUNE — Before firing Gregg Steinhafel as CEO earlier this month, Target’s board cut his pay and slashed his severance package. He would only get $15.9 million as a golden handshake, or so said a recent regulatory filing. It looked like a victory for investor activists, a real reduction in excessive CEO pay. But it wasn’t really.
In fact, while $15.9 million represents extra pay from his termination as CEO, Steinhafel is leaving the company with four times that amount.
The golden handshake from the company includes cash severance, accelerated vesting of some equity awards, and certain above-market interest on deferred compensation. This totaled more than $21 million. However, Steinhafel had to pay back some of the money because of a quirk involving cash paid up front rather than as part of his pension. This reduced his disclosed severance to $15.9 million.
But Steinhafel is getting much more than the initial news headlines suggested. He’s leaving with an additional $33.1 million in non-qualified deferred compensation, a sort of super-sized 401(k), and $1.2 million from a pension that he didn’t have to pay back. Also not included in the headline figure endorsed by Target TGT are Steinhafel’s stock options that he can continue to exercise over the next five years. Some are underwater, but even at today’s depressed stock price these are worth $10.8 million.
Thus Gregg Steinhafel’s full walk-away package is $61 million.

I can't fathom what retail will go into this location. There already is pretty much everything there.
Maybe residential?

Yeah it would be tough to fit it in with all of the other stores they have planned, but the there's basically 0 chance at getting any other space in that mall this size, so if they don't do it now, I have no idea when the opportunity will come up again.

what is simons? i have never heard of this place.
i was thinking that maybe for the chinook location they will divide the space up and make room for more smaller stores. but i would think that someone will want to get their mitts on the space soon, in order to redecorate it and be up and running in time for the next upswing.
i'd wet myself if a giant sportchek moved in there......
