The point give to the Sharks was worse given the game situation after 1 period. The point give to the Kings was OK for me since they were arguably outplayed and definitely behind.

Perhaps if by the smallest of chances we win tomorrow night in Anaheim that 8 game winless streak can be forgiven. Other ways no.

Imagine if they'd even gone .500 during that losing streak....
I voted no, 8 game losing streak and a 4 game win streak makes us 4-8. That kind of record doesn't come close to the playoffs.
No matter what happens from here on out, there will always be a "what if" regarding those 8 losses IMO.

No. I'd say a six game streak would. At the outset of the 8 game losing streak, we were roughly 5 pts above the safe playoff pace (96 pts). At the end of it, we were 4 points down. A 6 game streak right now would put us above pace, erasing some of the damage of that losing streak.
We've turned into a streaky team.

I'm thinking we need 8 wins to neutralize the 8 losses for .500 hockey.
But beyond watching standings, almost every other aspect has been a treat to monitor.

When they had to collapse nearly constantly to help the goalie, they lost the ability to get out of their zone and spring a couple forwards in a transition attack, which has led to most of their offense this year. This isn't a team that can consistently grind out a cycle game and create consistent offensive pressure, just not enough size. So they rely on speed and defensemen joining the rush to create great opportunities. Without the ability to create speed in transition and have defensemen join the rush, they lost most of their offense. The defense wasn't terrible in that stretch (looking at shots against), just had to play from behind way too often, which forces them to become overly aggressive, leading to more odd man rushes the other way.

That is super interesting for me, thanks.
You never know what to assign the role of chicken and what to assign the role of egg.
The transition was dead, I thought it was a confidence issue, but you're right if you no longer trust your goaltender you can't streak your forwards so the outlet is gone.
Ortio is like the guy in the Dos Equis commercials so the team feeds off the swagger and now they're a counter team again.
Still don't see the Flames outplaying anyone, and that has to to stop, but they're doing more right now than they have in a while.

On paper, the Flames do not have the best roster when compared to teams like LA or Chicago. Because of this, a losing skid has to be expected or at least very likely. We have a young team and they are learning as a team which involves ups and downs.
I don't expect to make the playoffs, I hope we do. If we do, I think we'll have a pretty chance at beating any team we face. These guys seem to love the clutch situations and rise to the occasion. I'm happy as Flames fans, nobody showed up at the rink wearing paper bags or tossing jerseys like other fans during shorter losing streaks.
We should treat the losing streak exactly like the players should - it happened and it's done, don't need to think about it ever again.

Crazy how a poor record vs the Eastern Conference could cost the Flames a playoff spot.

It is getting there but not quite. I think they have a real good chance in righting the ship though.
If you go back to the 7 game segments breakdown, with 11 seven game segments you want to get at least 8 points in most of them. Just the 8 in each gets you to 88 points with 5 games remaining. So it really is important to grab 10 or 9 points in a few segments to make it easier on you in those final 5 games (if 95 is the target).
With that said the Flames have produced 8, 10, 10, 10, 1, and 8 points in the first 6 segments. They currently are sitting at 8 points with 3 games remaining in their current segment which will help only help if they get some points in the last three games. Still not much room for error as the team needs to win and bank a few extra points in the remaining four segments so they have a chance with the final 5 games in April.

Roughly half wiped out now. Losing streaks are extra costly when some games give away three points.
To get back to where we were, the Flames likely need another similar hot stretch in short order. Win another four in a row, or win another five in a row after a loss or something like that.

Not erased until I see the Flames in #2 in the division. We weren't fighting for a wildcard spot at that time.

I'm impressed they're still in a playoff spot despite the skid. I'm thinking that was the low point of the season though. Hopefully the long losing streaks are behind us.

We should be shooting for the #3 spot in the division, assuming Anaheim and Vancouver keep up their pace. Dallas and Colorado are starting to slowly win games, who knows if they can really turn it around and make a solid push. It'll be up to us to try and surpass the Sharks, and stay ahead of both SJ and LA for a long time, rather than just a few games.
I'd rather it be the Sharks, Kings, Jets, Avalanche and Stars (and maybe the Wild) fighting for WC spots as we comfortably sit in the #3 spot.

I still remain unconvinced that the Canucks are a playoff team and I think they'll end up on the outside looking in, to our benefit and jubilation.

Hmm, I think you might want to re-think your math there. In any event, of course the 8 game skid hurt. It's a blight on what has otherwise been a great season. But why just count this winning streak and the 8 game losing streak? That losing streak was sandwiched between two other winning streaks - so they went 8-8 over 16 games, then another 3-game losing streak and this four game winning streak.
The reason the current streak helps to make up for the skid is that they were on the road and 3 of the wins came against teams that we are battling with for our playoff spot...as well as coming after that 8-game losing streak that many expected would sap the confidence and momentum built up by this young and surprising team. The last three game streak was deeply concerning too because they played so poorly and really deserved those losses. Whether we ultimately make the playoffs or not, you have to really admire the resilience and mental make-up of this team. They're for real and they should only get better.

Yes, it reduces the damage. It does not reverse the damage. That eight-game losing streak hurt big time.

Let's just say if I had to choose between an 8 game losing streak in the middle of the season and an 8 game losing streak at the end of the season, I'd take the former.
Also if they win tomorrow, I will really start believing again.
