That’s nice. Kevin Lowe wants to win a cup within 8 years of starting the rebuild.
What was it Mick Jagger said about getting what you want?

Competing for a cup over an 8 year period isnt a unrealistic goal if you go about it the right way but winning one is a tough bar to set.

I liked that interview, he seems pretty optimistic yet cautious. Sounds like Gretzky will be involved with the franchise in some capacity. Black Knights is a pretty cool name, although they said they will have a name-that-franchise contest. But if Foley wants Black Knights, I'm guessing that one will win.

Black Knights isn't a bad name, sounds like we will have another team with a black Jersey in the league though.....Still beats the Mighty Ducks, worst name ever in the NHL, besides the Oilers.

Good Lord, 'name that anything' contests tend to be a tragedy.

Yeah because Phoenix is still totally gonna work out right? Right?! They definitely won't be gone within the next 5 years or so, even though the owners have an out clause to move the team. When has that team ever turned a profit in Phoenix? Ehhenyways, actually, I really think Bettman's face is stupid, independent of his track record as the commish. I was actually 9 years old when I lost my Jets, so I didn't really blame it on anyone, I was just sad

They could have moved the team to Nashville instead of giving that market an expansion team. Would that have made you any happier?
Here is the complete list of people who were willing to own and operate an NHL franchise in Winnipeg in 1997:

Very, very long read about the potential of a team in Vegas:
http://vegasseven.com/2015/01/15/bad...nhl-franchise/
Quote:
“We’re interested now in proving the viability of the team by being able to sell at least 10,000 season tickets, [though] I’d like to see us at 12,500,” Foley says. “The suites will all go. In fact, most of the [42] suites are already gone. The loge suites and the bunker suites [located at ice level] are already gone.
“We’re creating a group called the Las Vegas Founding 50. [We want] to get at least 50 local businesspeople and personalities, to commit to selling 60 tickets each. That would be 3,000 season tickets that would not be casino-based or corporate-based.
|
What is curious is that they are only planning 42 suites for this building? That is an oddly low number,

This is such a weird thing. This team will have basically NO fan base, all the fans will be for the away team. I mean I will probably go watch ALL of my Flames games there. It is sooooo cheap for me to fly/stay in Vegas as compared to going to Calgary. Do not get me wrong I would very much prefer to come to Calgary to watch a game.
However when you factor in 10 hours drive to Calgary ($300 in fuel both ways) vs 2 Hour flight to Vegas ($300 - $400 round trip). Hotels in Calgary at least $100 a night? Hotels in Vegas Free-$45 a night. Tickets to the game Calgary ($90-$300?), Tickets to Vegas (Free-$90).
Yes free tickets. Guaranteed hotels will throw in free tickets if you stay at their hotel. If not I am sure you all easily get game day tickets for probably $10-$90.

I am willing to wager a hotel wont throw in free tickets if you stay there.
Maybe if you are at one of the higher levels of their rewards program.
You going to the game = spending less money at their hotel.

Then I guarantee you've never been to Vegas.
I have seen countless shows for free. Typically I get my rooms for free. A full hotel room, means you are more likely to party and gamble and spend money in said hotel. There will no doubt be all kinds of deals for free tickets with purchase of a hotel room or free hotel rooms with purchase of tickets or vice versa.
This will especially be true if the team is called the Black Knights and the arena is close to the Excalibur. You think that name is a coincidence or do you think the Casino has something do with the name?

Maybe get a discount on something if you buy hockey tickets but the other way has money leaving the Casino/Hotel.
Yes I have been to Vegas many times and yes I have gotten a variety of comped items. But everything relates back to the hotel/hotel group in some way.
Sending someone to a hockey game for 3 hours where they will be spending money on booze and food is not in a Casino/Hotel's best interests in recouping the cost of a comp'ed room or show tickets etc.

I'm sure the hotels/hotel groups will have an interest in the team/venue and as such will benefit on dollars spent there.

They do it all the time. Like I said who comes to Vegas and stays one day? So what if the game is 3 hours, you still have to spend 21 hours somewhere. Empty hotel rooms cost money. I've gotten deals/free tickets on UFC, Nascar and other sporting events. NHL will be no different. If the team is to be called the Black Knights I already have no doubts in my mind the Excaliber will have all kinds of free tickets and promotions going on.
The Casino owners aren't dumb. Especially with the economy being poor they know more people they can bring to the city = better chance of making money.

With a major casino group actually owning the arena, it shouldnt be a problem for their affiliated hotels to send people to spend money at the hockey games

Exactly. Their main goal is to attract more people to the city, and their casinos. As mentioned spending 3 hours off casino is of minimal effect when you consider most people will end up making a vacation out of the trip.
Let alone the amount of advertising the Casinos will get through the arena, and though other publicity. "Hey Edmonton fans! You team sucks and so does the weather! Come down to Las Vegas its 60 degrees warmer here. When your team inevitably loses we can get drunk and go to the house of ill repute!"
Sold.
