Early Oscar Films

Well, its still only the middle of October, still about 3 months until the Oscars are handed out but is Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ the two heavyweights for best picture so far this year?

I don't think either one should get it, or be nominated either. I think both are interesting films but are not the best films of 2004, and won't be once more contenders come out in the usualy November-December dash. Right now I would give that title to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind.

So go on, where Fahrenheit 9/11 or The Passion the best movies from 2004 thus far? Or what would you pick?

Farenheit 9/11 as a nomination for best picture is total garbage. I tried watching it a second time and it was excrutiating.

I'd like to second your nomination of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind..

Couldn't agree more.

Moore's film was interesting.........entertaining, even. But Best Picture?

As for Gibson's movie, just watched it yesterday. Was very diappointed. The whole movie was pretty much just a prolonged blood bath. Same as Moore's.........interesting, maybe thought-provoking, but no way it is Best Picture.

If either of these 2 movies are nominated come Oscar day, then it has been a truly sad year for movie-goers.

Best movie I have seen this year? Maybe Collateral...seriously. But that won't be nominated obviously.

F9/11 was a joke...did I hear correctly that Moore took it out of the running for best documentary so it could be entered into the Best Picture category?

I can honestly say I haven't seen any great movies this year.

Best one was probably Super Size Me, but that may have an outside shot at best 'documentary'. Seen some other entertaining movies, but really nothing that's Oscar material.

9/11 I thought was good, raised some points, but wasn't made very well - the thoughts didn't seem too well connected either (not to mention Moore not knocking the ball WAY out of the park when he could have). Could have been a whole lot better.

Haven't seen Passion yet...don't really want to either.

The Passion of the Christ and Fahrenheit 9/11 are both overrated if you ask me. I did enjoy both of them but neither are movies I would see more than once. Which lead me to something I really don't get- why the hell would anyone buy The Passion DVD. This movie doesn't have layers- it is just Jesus getting the complete crap beat out of him for an hour and half. Not a movie I can imagine ANYONE wanting to watch more than once.

(I agree with you on Fahrenheit calf. Moore could have done a lot more with that movie and tore the Bush Admin multiple arseholes.)

NOT for the faint of heart. I don't mind the odd violent show, but Passion was almost too much for me.

Another vote for Eternal Sunshine. Fantastic movie.

I think F9/11 will be nominated for Best Picture, no question. Won't win though. Still a ton of Oscar calibre pictures yet to be released though.

My vote would go to Kill Bill II, if that is considered a 2004 release.

Yeah Flames Addiction, I think Kill Bill should be considered. LOTR's only got it's nods at the end of their trilogy so perhaps it'll be the same for the Bill's. They did get huge critical responses. And before people discount the possibility of F9/11 and the Passion, think people, it's the Oscars, can you say...Titanic!

Wow. Looking over that list there's not one movie on it that I thought was absolutely spell binding. Most are mediocre, with one or two above average.

You know it's a bad year when an Adam Sandler movie makes it into the top 10.....

Of films to come out so far this year, I think Spotless Mind is the only legitimate best picture candidate. Of films not released yet, the ones I think could end up getting best picture nominations are Sideways, The Machinist, and The Life Aquatic, Kinsey, and Huckabees. And since there's always one epic and Troy was utter crap, I guess Alexander has an outside chance.

The most likely contenders for best picture of 2004 will be rolling out over the next 10 weeks. High on the list is Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, which offers a glimpse at the high-flying, high-rolling life of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. Unless Oliver Stone's Alexander is a compete dud it will nab one of the coveted spots because Hollywood loves a spectacle.

Musicals are popular once again with both audiences and academy voters, so Joel Schumacher's Phantom of the Opera looks like another safe bet for a best picture nod.

No film is getting more positive advance buzz in Hollywood these days than Mike Nichol's Closer, a story of four people's love and betrayal of one another. It's based on a stage play and stars Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen.

What about Big Fish? I thought that movie was amazing. Really well done.

Not sure if it's from 2004 though... thought it was.

Its a yearly thing, December 2004 is the final cut off for 2004 movies.

Ray has alot of Buzz going for it right now, and is a movie I want to see. From previews Jamie Foxx does a great job as Ray Charles. Most of the movies that want to get an Oscar are going to be coming out in the next two months.
