Bouma and the rest of our physical guys are going to have a rough night against the Sharks. Should be a fun one to watch.

Not saying he'll never be the guy, but he just isn't yet

I thought he was pretty good last year. IMO, in major weakness last year was strength. He was getting pushed into the net far to often and pucks were getting through...I don't see the same issues this year.

I don't think we're talking about the same things. I think it's great that Ortio is hot. I totally agree with starting him tonight. Great goaltending is fun to watch, and it helps the Flames immensely. That's all good.
I'm questioning the statement that Ramo should be dealt and Hiller should become the backup, for this season *and* next, if Ortio plays well again tonight. That initial statement that I quoted and replied to is way, way over the top.

I remember Fred Brathwaite was like our 5th string goalie or something that came in during a rash of injuries and ended up being our starter for a few years.

And if Gillies decides to play another year of college, what then?

My impression is that Gillies has no interest in college. I think he is there this year because the Flames basically told him to stay. They didn't think he was ready to jump.
I was actually going to post earlier that I think, if there were a situation where the Flames traded one of the goalies and kept Ortio here, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Gillies called up the Flames and offered to join Adirondack immediately.
btw.. I have actually spoken to someone in Providence hockey about him - mods can PM me is they like (though the above scenario is 100% speculation on my part)

I'm excited to see what Bouma can do with 1st line minutes and a hot hand. Not to mention how many hits he'll be registering with 20+ minutes on the ice. He may not be as big as the Sharks, but he gives it all he's got every shift.
Another interesting thing to point out is that nobody seems to go after Bouma when he lays out 2 players in one shift. The guy never fought much in pro, but maybe that mean looking game face is all it takes to intimidate the opposition .

Dn't forget Kipper was the so-called "third stringer"" to Nabokov & Toskala. Soon as they traded him for that reason along he blows up into a legend.

The race, as it stands today (games over .500):
5. WIN +10
6. VAN +10
7. SJS +8 (host CAL)
8. LAK +6 (host ANA)
9. CAL +5 (in SJS)
10. COL +2 (in TBL)
11. DAL +2 (host WAS)
12. MIN +0 (host ARI)
A win moves us right up behind SJ and with the possibility of passing LA.
A loss drops us down to within 1 of DAL and/or COL, if they win

FANTASTIC post Cali Flames Fan. I usually like to stop by and update the forum on the sharks when they play the flames, but you did a great job of it here. My only quibble is this line about Hertl - it's correct except I'd say that Hertl had been assigned to take Desjardins' spot on the 4th line center when Desjardins took one game off for paternity leave and that line instantly got hot. Hertl scored in that game and a linemate scored in the next one. Look for that line to be the third line tonight. Desjardins can't seem to get back into the lineup now after being the 4th line center all year.
Karlsson has been a complete surprise. There's nothing special about this guy, but he's Pavelski-like-hockeysmart, knows where to be on the ice, knows what to do once he's there and then he tries like hell to do it. Not many SJ fans had even heard of him when he was called up to fill the spot vacated when Thornton was injured.
CGY has a really fun style of hockey to watch this year and it seems to elevate the sharks a bit when they play each other. The Sharks seem to be rounding into form - again, so I expect this to be another fun game and a strong one for the sharks. Always fun watching Johnny Hockey (TM)

“@PollakOnSharks: Talking about CGY's Gaudreau, #SJSharks Wingels was asked if he'd trademark a nickname. "No," he said, laughing at notion of Tommy Hockey.”
“@PollakOnSharks: #SJSharks Wingels wasn't taking anything away from Gaudreau, by the way: "He’s fun to watch. He’s the kind of player this league needs."”

ABSOLUTELY! Little guys like Gaudreau show the world that you DON'T have to be a freakishly large human to play the game. It makes little guys like me really happy :-)
Just don't score too much against my team, please...

What are your thoughts on Marleau? He's been getting the minutes, but just hasn't been able to produce at the clip we're used to seeing this year. I think he went 10+ games without a point recently until he scored last game.

But it really is if you are the mindset that the Kings are probably going to up it a notch and make the dance which means that realistically the Sharks or Canucks are our best chance to bounce out. If that is the case you cannot give up a 4 point game to the Sharks when you are 4 points behind. Got to win.

I believe in this team! Flames win a close one, Monahan builds on last game and starts a point streak
