Negative, though I haven't been in there to compare. I wasn't a huge fan of my closest Wal-Mart in Calgary either, the one off 64 Ave and 11 St NE.

The south Lethbridge Wal-Mart is as nice as a Wal-Mart can possibly be, I reckon. I end up stocking up every time I go home.

I liked Target. Bought a $40 pair of work boots there that were more comfortable and lasted way longer than other pairs that were $150 or more. Still have them and they look nearly new after being through some hellacious work.

Target was like Zellers without the depressing zombie apocalypse vibe.

O well. Canadian targets are no where near what American targets provide. Walmart in Canada suck too once you ahve been to an American one. Off to the deep with them.

Their has only been a dozen or so times I couldn't find an Item there. A hub for my bike buying locally here in Vic would have cost me $250 or Above. It cost me $ 80 dollars from a seller on Amazon.

Interesting enough a motorcycle shop I frequent is down sizing 75% because of Internet suppliers.



I was hoping Target in Canada would fail. Targel offers bicycles called micargi bikes. Micargi bikes rip of a lot of my friends company bikes ( projeckt 346) back home in Amsterdam. Good riddance.

I like shopping at U.S Target stores. I hated shopping at Canadian Target stores. The atmosphere in the stores up here was just sad and gloomy.

There's a ridiculous Target still under construction in Winnipeg by the airport. It's by itself, built on stilts, and has parking under. The store is on top of the above ground parking lot.

That's gotta be an expensive walk away...

I went to one in the states to see what it was about, and it is almost a direct copy of Bass Pro. Cabelas' choice of location in Calgary is interesting because it does lend itself to compare against Bass Pro. However, their expansion plan across the west is very obviously targeting Wholesale Sports. To the point that they even opened north and south Edmonton stores, the one city where WSS has two stores, in the north and south.

I don't think there is room for both of those companies, so I fully expect one will fail, probably within 2-3 years.


As far as Krispy Kreme goes, that was one of the most overrated companies ever. I did enjoy the irony of how they came in predicting they would take down Tim Hortons, and now the old KK location is a Tims.

It's on the old Canad Inns Stadium site. Opened awhile back, Target came pretty close to buying the building/land off the landlords (Cadillac Fairview and a Local Developer)- probably delayed due to knowing they might leave. Not sure how close a Walmart is, hopefully they can get one in there. Here's a site plan.

I really think their biggest mistake was trying to sell their donuts in stores across the city. They never seemed to sell well; I know I wouldn't buy them not knowing how old the donuts were. They have to be fresh to be really good. They should have just opened a second location in the south (like along MacLeod) and they two stores would have done well.

Instead not only did they have the cost of making and distributing products that didn't sell, but they had people buying that inferior product and having comments like yours. I say that because the majority of people who have said that never bough donuts fresh from the location in the NE.

Probably true in general, but in my specific case, I only bought from the store itself. And I only ever bought them twice.

The second part of the problem their distribution model created was the fact that people who bought a half dozen donuts at Walmart didn't go to the store to spend money there. That also cost KK potential sales of the overpriced novelty crap they sold, like coffee mugs.

I still find them very overrated, even though I had them fresh from the store. The only donut of theirs that I liked was the plain glazed while fresh. It did not store well, and once it cooled it was terrible. All of their other selections of donuts were terrible. My go to donut selection is a chocolate dip and I will take a 2 day old superstore chocolate dip over a krispy krème one. The chocolate they use is that bad (in my memory). Basically, I would have went to the Tim Hortons next door and got my chocolate dip and skipped the Krispy Kreme.

One problem Krispy Kreme has is in Canada donut culture is huge. People bring donuts to work, events, home, etc. Krispy Kreme donuts were just terrible cold, meaning that when people tried them in these contexts it left a bad impression.

Jeeze you guys really feel strongly about your grocery stores.... I don't "despise" or "love" any of them... They are all pretty similar. They're stores that are laid out in a similar fashion, with similar products. Sometimes they're busy, sometimes they're not.

How do you "LOVE" one and "HATE" the other? Walk in, find your crap, pay, leave...

I always thought another mistake was that they gave you a free doughnut on your way in. The first time I was caught in the allure of it, wasn't sure what to do after enjoying my free doughnut so I bought a dozen then preceded to give them away, but after that I wouldn't even consider popping into a store for a doughnut: their going to give me one for free, and now i'm full, and it seems weird to walk back out of the store, satisfied and having not spent a penny. As much as I like free doughnuts, I can't imagine being the guy that gets his sample and gets back out of line and into his car.

Maybe more people are buying bulk doughnuts, but for me it's usually an impulse buy once and a while.

Produce is often wildly different in grocery stores. The shelves OK but if you buy a lot of produce the store matters.
