Taking a while to get to 5000

If it factors into their decision making at all they must know how nice it is to have a big save 45 seconds into the game rather than letting in a soft goal 45 seconds into the game. And that type of goaltending was becoming a little too common place lately.

I don't know how to vote on this one but in the immortal words of MacTavish "He's earned the right to fail", so I'm in favour of keeping him up for a while.
Speaking of those no good Oilers, how about we trade them Hiller for Pittsburgh's first round pick? God knows they could use a goaltender, and he might just get them to 27th overall

Someone here had a good idea, procrastinate making a decision here as long as possible by assigning Ramo on a conditioning stint

At some point they need to know what they have in Ortio. If they are going to let Ramo leave or trade Hiller, they need to be sure Ortio can play. It changes the plan for the offseason as well. Why not now?

You can't send Ortio down until he has a bad performance. You just can't.
Send Ramo for conditioning for sure.

If most of the stars align:
- Ortio proves that he's a keeper by the all star break.
- Hutton proves that he's not a keeper by the all star break
- Flames trade Ramo to the Predators for a 2nd round pick in time for him to win the games versus the Sharks, Jets and Avalanche that will be played before Rinne returns.
If all the stars align:
- Same as above, except Hiller gets traded to the Predators instead of Ramo
- The prospect of being passed by Ortio on the depth chart sparks Ramo to return to his early season form.

All I know, is that if Ortio is our best goalie, he needs to be in the lineup and Treliving has shown that he's willing to make sure we ice our best roster.

I can't see the Preds committing 4.5M for Hiller for next season. Option 1 is possible though.

What is Ortio's waiver status this year? Is there a chance that he would be waiver eligible if he played a certain number of games this year?
EDIT: never mind. He won't reach that number this year. (60 games total I believe).

Still. Rinne is their starter. No sense having Hiller around for at least 2.25M to start 10-15games.

Unrelated to the current topic...
Bingo, I just wanted to say that I really enjoy the daily poll. They've been my favourite threads over the last couple weeks and I don't see that changing in the foreseeable future.

I miss Capgeek!
As per the CBA (can someone please stop me from further incriminating myself as a nerd? Please?):
Goalies who signed at age 18-20 have 80 games of waiver eligibility within 4-6 years of the first contract. (So if you sign at 18, you have 80 games or until the season you are 24 years old).
Goalies who signed at ages 21+ have 60 games or between 1-4 years of the first contract.
Ortio signed his ELC March 30, 2011 ( http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=557748). As he would be 20 on September 15th in 2011, it makes him 20 for signing purposes. He will have 4 years from his first contract (meaning 2015-16 season, he's waiver eligible) and has 80 games. He's only played 11, so he could play another 69 without needing waivers this year.
So yea, he's good. He will lose his waiver eligibility at the start of the 2015-16 season.

I picked 3 goalies, if Ortio hasn't given them a reason to send him down by the deadline then you trade someone.

He changes to a one way next year as well. Safe to say, he's on the team next year. Which is why I'm not as fussed as some if he gets sent back - I think he will know his future is pretty secure.

What gets more complicated is how (if) he loses.. what if it is a 1-0 game where he still played lights out? Or even a 3-1 game where he stood on his head but was left out to dry?
We know what we are going to get from Hiller and Ramo, so if we get a decent amount of games and Ortio looks legit, you move one of the other goalies because his spot has been earned at that point.

You continue to play him because of the message it sends and the message it would send if you otherwise sent him down. That part is obvious. Good lord, look at who we are up against here coming up and the importance of those games. You absolutely need the hot hand and someone playing with confidence.
Hiller has been hot garbage lately, and Ramo would be coming in cold as ice. No way Jose.
Now, Gio called him Kipper. And the fact is he looks like our future now in net. So the not-so-obvious part, is what to do with Hiller/Ramo. IMO which goalie is better is up for debate but Ramo makes less and is probably equally as good if not better so you roll the dice and deal Hiller while there's a market for him and his cap space.
The one argument to that is well what if we get in the playoffs, what if someone gets hurt, what if we need that third goalie, etc. But every so often you need to take a chance, and this opportunity won't come along often. Hell we weren't even supposed to be near a playoff spot and if we don't make it in, we don't make it in. You don't pass on this opportunity to move a goalie now however.

Is there a wrong answer to this question/poll? I think every answer could be justified. I would like Hartley to talk to the kid and tell him we will play you until you lose your first game. Even if you let in one goal on 70 shots and we lose we are gonna send you down. You know how we feel about you, you have a one way contract next year.
As for trading goalies? I prefer Ramo because of style, he doesnt sit deep in his net like Hiller. I hate neither goalie, and again is there a wrong answer for this either? I would listen to trade offers for both. Second round pick should get it done for either goalie. I also have no issues keeping either one of them. Neither are 1A goalies, both are 1B goalies. Be thankful we have that, the Oilers are trying to figure out who is 2A and 2B lol.
Nice problem to have!

Keep playing Ortio until he has a bad game or a couple average games, then you send him down, but work on trading either Hiller or Ramo.
