It would make the Oilers better though, so I am not a fan of that prediction.

I'm not sure it would. Playing on Edmonton would expose Phaneuf's defensive shortcomings even more. He's a slower, somewhat more physical Schultz.
And Hall is a skinnier Kessel.

Phaneuf would be Edmonton's best defenceman by a mile, flaws and all.

Which is hilarious.
I just think his flaws are the same as Edmonton's current overall defensive flaws now - bad zone coverage, bad decision making. His positives (what are they again - a hard shot and once in a while he hits someone) don't really add much. So he doesn't make them better - he makes their problems worse IMO.

I'd travel to any arena in the NHL to see Phaneuf's first game as an Oiler. Seeing his one handed poke check of doom in an Oilers jersey would be worth it.

Hearing #Marlies Brad Ross is latest #Leafs pick to be handed PED suspension.
First it was Ashton who was barely holding on to a NHL job, now Ross who was barely holding on to an AHL job

I didn't expect a change to happen this quick. I know it has only been three games, but it seems crazy that they could just shutdown teams and reduce their shot totals so quickly. It's like they just flicked a switch. I agree with what what people have said on here, we will see if it lasts. But so far the Leafs look like a different team and I am starting to enjoy watching them again win or lose. Before with Carlyle even if they were winning I wasn't enjoying the games because the Leafs were hemmed in their own zone for the majority of the game and would then score opportunistic goals. Now there is actually structure to their game.

^ Sample size. I'm sure you could find a few good three game stretches under Caryle too. Instant bump after a coaching change is not a unique phenomenon...it's almost more unique when it doesn't happen.
Let's see these numbers again 37 games from now.

Um, no, you really can't. Take a look: http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/gamelog.htm
This year the best 3 games stretch under Carlyle was the Nov 20th to 26th with an average of 27 shots against during that stretch.
I'm thinking you don't watch a lot of Leafs games because under Carlyle it was a shooting gallery.

Carlyle was awful, but you really do need to pay attention to sample size. Don't fall into the traditional Leafs habit of significantly overestimating yourselves. Especially when you've lost two of the three games you're crowing about.
As I mentioned above, lets see how this team is playing after 15 games, once the bump in motivation because of the new coach wears off.

The Oilers have played better under Nelson but playing better doesn't matter when your team is flawed and while the Leafs aren't as flawed as the Oilers they are still a flawed roster that's not built to play a complete game.

The shots against under Horachuk is the best the Leafs have allowed in 7 years.

Congratulations. I hope that trend continues, along with their .333 point %.
Also worth noting that the teams they played are 28th, 19th and 7th in shots for. So ya, let's wait another 37 games...

The only stat that matters:
CARLYLE: 21-16-3
HORACHUK: 1-2-0
I find it humorous that after 3 gaems, people are pointing out how Horachuk is turning the team around. Let's wait for a larger sample size, to determine if that is indeed true. Say 20 games from now?

Phaneuf is not a #3 D-Man. Ridiculous. If he was, his numbers would not be as good as they have been the last decade.
Dion Phaneuf would walk in on Anaheim, the team with the best NHL record and be their #1 guy.
And it's looking like Toronto's defensive numbers was a coaching issue.
|
No he wouldn't! The only thing Phanuef is interested in is putting up points and even at that he's not very good. His stock has plummited since he was traded from the Flames.

So there's never been a 3 game span in which the Leafs managed to keep the opposition under 22 in the past 7 years? I bet there was.
Or are you comparing a 3 game span to the season average in those years? Probably not because that would be silly.

People on the Toronto is no Good thread are No Good at reading.
In my first post I said it was too soon to know for sure, but in the first 3 games there is an undeniable change to the team. That's it.

Great. There was also an undeniable change in the first game by the Flames after losing to Florida.
