Would love to see us sign Marc Staal... but that seems like a longshot.
Top 4 of:
Gio-Brodie
Staal-Russel
would be stellar.

Boychuk or Staal would be a coup for our top 4.

I could see the Oilers throwing a fortune at Niemi.

Boychuk, or Staal would be first choice.
Marc Methot is another guy I would take.
Cody Franson as well.

Maybe for a fraction of his current salary.

On D I'd love to have one or more of these guys
Staal
Boychuck
Franson
Green (on an affordable contract)
For forwards I'd like Ward and maybe someone who'd become available through a trade but the forward crop doesn't look all that great.

The Flames need to shore up the second pairing. Assuming Boychuk and Staal re-sign (rumoured, I believe), Cody Franson would be a great pickup. 6'5 right-handed defenceman who's turning 28 and contributes offensively. Move Wideman down to the third pairing where he can play easier minutes but still contribute on the powerplay.

You have to think Carolina re-signs Staal. However, if he decides to go for the money, who is in a better position than the Flames to throw big numbers at him? They can also argue to being a team that is up and coming and a guy like him could really push them forward and he would have a big role on a team that is going to be good for a long time.
Total pipe dream, but hey?

New York? Or do you think Carolina is going to collect their third Staal?

Like most people have said I'd like to land Staal or Boychuk but I think chances are those guys re-sign with their current clubs. If not they are gonna have a lot of options as well. After that the list tails off quick. I wouldn't mind a guy like Franson but I think he's gonna cost more than he's worth and I rather save the money to overpay for someone who's gonna make a bigger impact on the team.

If we finish the year strong, and even squeak in for a round of playoffs, it would do huge things for our reputation come free agency. Players will see us as a definite team on the rise, and one worth considering. With the amount of cash we can throw out there with the cap going up, we might be able to reel in a big fish on D like a Staal.
