It's no secret that a solid third line center will go a long easy of improving your odds of being successful. i don't think our is to far fetched to think he can be our bolland, stoll, paulson. Additionally having him on our third line helps the other scoring lines get away from the defensive responsibility of covering the other teams top line.
This. I wouldn't call Backlund especially injury prone. More unlucky with those types of injuries. However I do think that perception of him would work nicely in favour of the Flames when locking him up at a cap hit that is lower than his actual value.
I am not sure the definition of injury prone, but I think someone who gets repeated, different injuries is injury prone. I like Backlund, quite a lot, but am a bit leery of his proclivity to getting injured.
I think a two-year deal at $2.5 million per would be something closer to what he has shown based upon injuries, as well as providing him the incentive to show what he truly can earn, if he stays healthy. If he does what we all think (and hope) he can do, then he is in the $4-5 million per year range.

Big part of the core.
Guy can play both special teams, shutdown role, scoring role, makes players around him better. So happy Hartley put him with Gaudreau last game, they seemed to have instant chem.
Love to see a 5 year deal at 4-4.5 per.
I still don't think we've seen the best of Backlund yet, or know what his ceiling could be.

I have a feeling Backlund will breakout next year, Gio-Style.
This year, he will rack up points but won't be on anyones radar cause of the injury and then next year people will be saying "he came out of nowhere".
Then the Flames will have a true center dilemma when Sean, Mikael and Sam are all on the team, playing like legit #1 centers. Then we build a team with 3 strong scoring lines and go on to win the presidents trophy and ultimately the cup with Gaudreau winning the Conn Smythe which he in turn is unable to lift.
If he can demonstrate he can stay healthy for a year, then sign him to a longer term deal.
I like the guy but you cannot build a team with a player you can only count on for 60 games a season.
You do realize that players like Bollig are making in the neighborhood of 2M per year now and are essentially unplayable on a decent team, right? How do you ask a player that does it all and is one of the best players on the team to take that kind of offer?
The Flames are a better team with Backlund in the lineup and there are probably at least a dozen teams that would take him in a heartbeat in the 3-4M range. Looking down the road at Bennett, Monohan, Backlund anchoring the center ice position for this franchise is a very promising prospect. Injuries come and go, it would be very foolish to tarnish a relationship with the guy over some freak injuries early in his career.

If we could get him for 4x4 that would be tremondous.
If he was healthy he would be worth more than 5. Giving him the same deal as Stajan would be a steal. The day he is healthy and is legitimately our 3rd center is the day we are contending.

You are bang on here. I think he will sign for 4m or so for 3 to 4 years. No way he gets a low ball offer because of his injuries. Like you said, he does it all. I wouldn't be surprised if they signed him to a longer term deal at 5m, 7 years or something to be honest. He is only 25, why not lock him in until he is 32. I wouldn't have an issue with that.

We are missing the most important opinion on backlund in this thread. Where are you?
He is taking time to properly prepare his notes as he is running out of points to back up his hate, we may have a sighting later tonight or early in the AM

Post didn't go through earlier
Whatever they do, hope they don't go over 2-3 years in term.
You have two centres next year that are well ahead of his talents. Jooris should be better next year and then you have Granlund who will be a year older. That's 5 guys competing for 3 center positions, if you believe Stajan and his contract are 4th line from now til retirement?
As long as they don't move 1 of the other 4 out to make room for Backs, who is still a candidate for injury - I'll be happy. And, Happy to see him have to compete for his position, something he didn't do since arriving.

What's going on here? A sensible and rational post about Backlund?
I am disappoint.
In all seriousness, I'm not sure Stajan will stay the entire length of his current contract, which opens up a spot for Jooris as a 4th line center, but he's certainly capable at right wing. Granlund may not end up as a center in the NHL unless he drastically improves his face-offs. In any case, I would put Backlund ahead of all 3 of those guys on any depth chart for the foreseeable future.

I like the thought of potential 20 goal scorer Jooris being on the 4th line. This would mean we are over talented, but I'm not sure this is the case. If Jooris continues to produce as he has this year, can't see how he moves to the 4th line, not sure how you get rid of Stajan either.
Also, if were not allowed to KHL Backlund after 3 horrific seasons of supposed learning curves / injuries etc. Not sure we can expect or demand Granlund to be great by next year. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't have more time to develop.

Ah, there it is…everything is right with the world again.

You missed our last 2 drafts? What about Bennett and Monahan?
What I said is my opinion as of today (subject to change of course).
I feel like we are too quick to project young players/prospects into high starring roles, without giving credit to the current players and their projected ceilings as well.
Example, just last summer, this board was all over Corban Knight being our #2 centre by this year, or next year. FFWD 6 months, and how silly does that look now?
I'm not saying Bennett & Monahan won't be our #1 and #2 centres in a few years. But with Backlund's defensive abilities, and with his ppg trend we've been seeing over the past 2+ seasons, and his noted leadership abilities, we need to give this guy more credit for doing what he's done at a high level (ie in the NHL). And at the end of the day we could be looking at a guy who turns out better than Bennett or Monahan *ducks*. Who knows. But with the Flames current cap situation, and looking at the CORE group moving forward, Backlund certainly has to be part of that group.
