December 18

On the penalty box:

They’ve got like four guys sitting over there, and room for like six other people to sit. They’re the best seats in the house, right at center ice. Like, if it was a football game, then that’s the best seat. I don’t get that [any] more. Really, it’s like a three-penalty-team a game now. Why do they make that deal? Why do they get that big place for there? When I was coaching Brett in novice when he was little back home, and he’d get penalties, I’d go, ‘Brett, you’re little. Why do you go over there and sit? Why do you want to go there?’ He says, ‘I can see better from there.’ [Reporter: How old was he?] He was just little. It makes sense, right? He could see better. When you think about it, I’m probably right for once.

What are the odds of finding a ref singing the anthem like Mr. Oprea from vancouver

Watching a referee struggle through the anthem followed by commentary by a Finnish goalie that is an antisocial recluse would be hilarious.

LMAO, I sure do love Darryl Sutter. Still trying to think outside of the box…the penalty box that is.

Removal of the penalty box all together is actual a good idea, Sutter's been beating that drum for years. He was being a little facetious with the penalized player in the opposite bench obviously but it's a sound idea.

Removes large penalty boxes, opens up some prime and highly priced tickets, and just let the penalized players sit on their own bench. Heard Sutter mention this a handful of times now.

It's a slight advantage for the penalized team because they can get the player they want out right away when the penalty expires. I suppose it cuts down on the talk between penalty boxes and potential scrums on the way back to the bench after coincidental penalties.

with a 10 minute misconduct and a 2 minute minor if the player steps on the ice before his penalty expires.

It actually does make sense the way the game has evolved.

That area between the benches where color commentators are, could be used for penalized players since the backup goaltender is doing color for the game.

It's too much for the refs. They can't ref the game and manage the penalized players too. That's why the league has box officials. The refs assign the penalty, the box official looks after releasing them back into play.

That's all we need is Brett Hull skating out onto the ice for a breakaway pass to win game seven in OT for the Dallas Stars, only to have a replay on TV during Bettman's Stanley Cup speech show that he jumped out a full 0.8 seconds before his penalty was over. Mind you, at least then no one would ever talk about his foot in the crease again.

ok, add in this wrinkle. it is a 2 minute penalty, but the player is inelgible to re-enter the ice surface until the stoppage of play after his penalty expires.

His team is only shorthanded for 2 minutes, but he can't get back on. Off ice official can speak to a linesman or a ref through the helmet tech to let them know who is eligible.

Or....and this is hypothetical mind you....every single ice arena in the world could not rip out their penalty boxes and ham-fistedly cram seats there instead and just ignore Darryl's attempt to troll them?
