Stay the course.
Communication will be key with Ortio, let him know why he is being sent back down, that he is being groomed and his long term development is more important.

Hiller isn't athletic at all. He just makes himself tall from his knees and dares shooters to shooter tutor him.
Hiller does more with who he is than Ramo has managed, but neither are true starters in my mind.
They are however, great place holders!

Hiller has had seasons where he's started 46, 59, 49, 73, 50 for the Ducks. That's a starting goaltender IMO. He's not an elite starting goaltender but he's a starting goaltender.

can't really argue with that ...
however the league is full of stories of guys that were starters for 8 seasons then took a step back and was no longer employed that way.
But I agree ... there are technically 30 starting goaltenders in the league, and he makes that list. He's bottom third though (which is fair or the Flames wouldn't have secured him)

I think we also ran into stretches where if one goalie played bad, the other guy stepped in right away and was real good. Hiller was great to start, had some bad games, Ramo jumped in, had some great games, and vice versa a few times. December when they switched, neither was great, but Hiller was definitely the better of the two.
I'm of the opinion you keep Ortio in the AHL for the rest of the year (barring injuries) and let him take the mini-Flames on a playoff run. Keep both Ramo/Hiller and let them play out the year and decide who you want to keep. I know this isn't really maximizing on an asset, but really I think we need both if we're gonna push for a playoff spot.

I think he should get the game on thursday and reward him for his performance last week then he gets sent down. We have space for an extra player to come off the IR so what does it hurt to reward him and then send him down on Friday.
I think he will be sent down and play a hell of a lot for the baby flames and make a good run in the playoffs. At least let's hope so.

Hiller is too inconsistant for my liking. I would trade Hiller and keep Ramo.

I like Ortio, the way he sucks pucks into his body reminds me of Bernier. And of course that other guy from Turku with his athleticism.

I think trading Ramo is the best option, you look back at the Berra thing and realize how much of a steal trading away an OK back up can be at this time of year, especially when it pretty much predetermined he will not be back with you.

Ramo is just as inconsistent as Hiller. That's why it's good to have them both around so Hartley can go with the hot hand.
I'd be very weary of changing the whole goalie scene at this stage of the season. If Ortio comes in and steals the gig outright then great, but if it's not as clear as that I think it's best to keep them both around.

Certainly if they're in the playoff hunt and no one's going to pay a good price for a goalie, you keep both for this season. You can't put your hopes on Ortio if you're fighting for every point.
I expect that Hiller takes the next start regardless of what the situation is with the other goalies but I don't think the coaching staff regards him as a clear number one yet since they are open to giving Rämö several starts if he's doing well. A backup doesn't get several starts in a row even if he wins. Maybe they see Joni the same way and give him another one, but I kind of doubt it.
It's a shame that Karri has been injured this season. I feel that there would have been a real competition for the starter role otherwise. If he's healthy for the rest of the season, I think there still might be.

Ramo is widely inconsistent, much more so than Hillier.

I'd say then your measurement for inconsistency is inconsistent

The latter half of last season was the only time he got regular starts for a longer time and if I recall right he was pretty consistent. I don't think he's reached that level this season. Again, maybe with more starts.

Giordano seems to be a fan ...
Quote:
“He was great,” said Mark Giordano. “He looked really calm and confident in the net. Any time you can get your goalie to have a performance like that, it goes a long way — it’s going to get you a win. We’ll see what happens. I know we have three capable goalies now on our team. Hopefully it plays out well for us and we keep piling on points.”
“He’s a confident guy,” said Giordano. “I mean, he’s been like that ever since I’ve known him. Mentally, I think he’s got it. He has — a lot like Kipper — that attitude where he’s really calm. The confidence, you can just see it on him — that, he has. I don’t think that’s the issue.
“If he can keep those performances going, it’s going to go a long way for him, personally, and for our team.”
|
Giordano quotes are always interesting, you almost see what he's really trying to say inside the quotes.
Is this a "lets play the best guy we have" slant? Seemed that way to me.

Worth noting that Ramo has also received the Kiprusoff comparison, from Glencross I believe. Maybe others.

That's what I thought too. Probably hoping Hartley reads the paper
