Actually no, he never got beat as the stats show he got a shut-out. Hitting the post doesn't even count as a shot on goal. It's a missed shot just like any other but it makes a nice sound to let the shooter know he was close.

Totally agree with both of you, but there's value in discussing wick prospects we do think will make it and which won't. A good example of that is the Carroll discussion MMF and I had. I'm excited by his production, grit and size. MMF simply said he was less impressed as he's an overager, but didn't need to stand from the rooftops to be right about it. History shows he is likely right, but it didn't become a "wet blanket" argument where anyone was invested in someone failing. A chorus of "he's gonna be a superstar" is a poor conversation

A shot that hits the post doesn't beat the goalie any more than any other shot that is wide beats the goalie.
When you see a lot of posts, it could be luck, but more often it is a case of the goalie covering the angles well and forcing the shooters to the edges.
Also, did Monahan 'beat' Lack, or did he simply hit the post?

You get to say "The Flames just aren't going to succeed if they don't X, Y, and Z" and then celebrate when they win (games, make playoffs, win rounds in the playoffs ...)
Then when people call you on it, you say, "Hey, I'm just being realistic!" If a prospect doesn't turn out? "I was the first one to say Drew Shore wasn't going to make an impact!"
Everyone makes fun of the Detroit Lions fan who got "2015 Super Bowl Champions" tattooed to his calf, but (personal tastes regarding tattoos aside) I think there's something admirable about being so optimistic.

This is the Eric Francis strategy. If you're right, you can brag and if you're wrong, who cares... enjoy the ride.

I'd qualify the discussion you and MMF had as a mature and measured one - the type that I personally welcome. I'm talking about the tiresome discussion of "Player X is terrible" or "Player Y will never amount to anything" that some seem to consistently engage in. Also talking of those who can find something to complain about in any situation. There's people with a generally negative and closed-minded outlook (the type that Jiri discussed above) and there's people who have a cautiously optimistic approach and leave themselves open to possibilities (such as yourself and MMF as evidenced by the discussion you mentioned).
There's individuals like Eric Francis (as mikeecho brought up) and others on CP whose angle or slant is always negative and like Jiri, I can't help but feel that they do so in order to proclaim themselves right as the odds are in their favor.

Yup.
In support of which: A puck can hit the post and bounce out, or it can hit the post and bounce in. With the good goalies, you very seldom see the latter. The inner side of the post is part of the angle that the goalie is covering.
Back in the 80s, when most goalies were bad (by modern standards), you used to see more shots go off the post and in. Those goalies were a lot sloppier about their positioning.

You can sneer at "beat" all you want, but if you ask a goalie or a coach, I think they prefer the puck be stopped by the goalie. That's what players, coaches and commentators mean when they say the goalie was beat but saved by the post.
And yes, I say Monnie beat Lack, but just missed the goal.
Anyway, all I'm saying is, let's go more than one game this season. Irving looked great his first game. And a couple inches on those shots and the game looks a lot different. I think Ortio did great not to be shaken after the posts.

That and the fact that pretty much every goalie plays a butterfly style. Brodeur is the last of a stand-up style type of goalie and even he's more hybrid than stand-up.
