Thats the biggest issue, Grats has been a huge part of this club and where we are now, not necessarily on the scoreboard all the time but this team has taken huge leaps forward and really come together as a team and hes been a really big part of that.
I dont want to assign it too much credit, but the line brawl against Vancouver last year really galvanized the identity of this team and brought them together and they've held that identity and stuck with it ever since and he was a massive part of that.
There really is a huge human element to it, just reading Treliving's words this was no 'sending a goon to the minors' transaction, this was 'how is this team going to move forward without Brian McGrattan?'
No doubt it was a really hard decision for Treliving and Hartley just look at how we as fans are taking it and we barely know McGrattan.
Just look at how much time and effort Treliving dedicated to making sure Brian McGrattan knew that we as a team and an organization like, value and respect him.
As much as this sucks, I think Treliving and Hartley did this with a lot of class and that McGrattan will move forward with the same amount class.

There's no way of knowing of course, but I honestly believe that Monahan is not as successful as he's been without McGrattan on that team.
He was going to be successful either way, but I really think Gratts helped him a lot.

I think one benefit of this is now that he's on the baby Flames, he can help mentor some of the kids down there too. If he can help Poirier and Baertschi that would be huge for us.

Love this guy and what he brought to the team. Will never forget the role he played in the biggest game of the year last season and how great he's been for Monahan. Wish he had more games with the big club this year. Bollig struggled for a long period but was allowed to work through it. Feels like Grats barely got a chance to play. Was a sweet game last night. But would have loved to see Big Ern on the ice for that final face off with 2 seconds left. If burrows tried that stuff with him on the ice he could have squished his head like grapefruit.

^^agree, was chatting with two friends before the game and when I mentioned the Grats waiving, both seemed pretty relieved.

I wish someone could explain what this 'mentoring' is all about. Is he going to teach them to stick handle and score? I could see him protect them from cheap shotters.

He's going to teach the young kids what it takes to be a professional athlete and the attitude in which it takes. Good role models are hard to come by and having positive people in a room is never a bad thing.

How to handle being a professional, what it takes to make it in the NHL - the work ethic, commitment and attitude it takes to succeed.

Being a pro is more than stick handling and scoring. He has dedicated his life to being a pro, he can teach the kids how to handle healthy scratches, workout habits, life habits, how to avoid substance issues. He may not put up a ton of points in the NHL or ahl but he is the type of guy that everyone in the dressing room can learn from.

Theres a lot to it, especially from the perspective of a plugger.
The effort, discipline and work that it takes. Spending downtime in the gym instead of the bar, showing up to camp in shape, getting along with teammates, etc.

The guys who can't stick handle and score are the ones who have the toughest times sticking around in the league. They know best what you have to do to stay in this league and get the most out of themselves.

Damn I really hope he doesn't go to the minors and start fighting a bunch. He's over 30, he's been in a ton of fights. No need to get brain damage now, wish him the best. Such a good dude.

Other pretty much answered this, but his experience with alcohol abuse will go a long way in keeping our kids on the right path. I wouldn't want to know what kind of trouble I'd get into if I was making good money around 20 years old.
The guy is everything you want in a big brother figure. He's been there, he doesn't want others to go there.

Reading here you would think that a lot of the flames youngsters are struggling greatly with being a hockey pro and basically balancing on the brink of falling into substance abuse with Brian McGrattan being the one who keeps them from falling. I get the idea of having a mentor in the room, and I'm sure Grats a good one, but it's not like the flames have a shortage of good mentors and leaders in the dressing room. I think the importance of Brian McGrattan to this hockey team might be just a tad exaggerated.

Tell the Oilers that mentorship isn't critical to the continued success of a team.

you're just furthering what crapshoot said; the Flames do have a lot of other strong leaders in the room. McGrattan seems like an awesome guy but this team has a lot of other leaders that also lead by example of how the game is played today. Saying the oilers have no leadership really has nothing to do with the McGrattan situation at all unless you think that McGrattan is the only leader or the most important leader and without him the Flames will become party bois like the oilers.
Again, McGrattan seems like a great guy and I hope he helps a lot of people in the future but he'll do so as a person, not as a hockey player. It would be great if he could get on with the Flames as some kind of conditioning coach but they are better without him playing. The Flames will not turn into the oilers without him.
