I like it, I expect this deal was in the works and agreed upon and that is why McGrattan was waived.
I don't understand the need to have McGrattan waived? This looks like a minor league dufus-for-dufus level deal where the contract number swap was square. The Flames did not need to free up money or a spot on the big team to make the deal. Was Shore on the Panthers roster? If not there was no need to waive McGrattan. Maybe this was just the day Treliving found the number to the league fax machine he misplaced a week ago and he got the backed up transactions fired off.
I think its the opposite. 2 more nhl games and he has to pass waivers every time he goes up or down. So he probably doesn't come up until he's in Calgary to stay, likely won't get a quick look.
He doesn't have to clear waivers if he's called up since re-entry waivers were scrapped in the newest CBA.

I think Alberta Beef's line of thinking was that McGrattan's being put on waivers is the first step in opening up one of the 23 spots on the roster for Shore.
I'll never profess to be wise in the ways of the AHL, but Shore is certainly a name I've been hearing for a few weeks as Frieman et al have been bouncing him around as a guy that everyone was scouting, ... an NHL ready AHL player that would be moved since there wasn't room in Florida.
So when I heard the deal on the way to the game I knew the name and was pleased Calgary won a derby for once.
Will be interesting to see what they have planned.
I too think that the McGrattan move has to be related, and likely they would have called him up for the Arizona game this week if Arnold didn't get hurt tonight.

5. Drew Shore, San Antonio Rampage (Florida Panthers) Shore is one to watch not just because he’s having a tremendous season putting up points, but also because his name has been thrown around in trade rumors from time to time this season. With a fairly packed lineup up the middle in Florida, it’s not likely that Shore will see any time in the big league this season.
Shore’s putting up pretty healthy numbers in his third season in the AHL. With nine goals and 30 points after just 35 games, he could be nice trade bait. He’s skated in 67 games with the Panthers over the last two seasons, tallying eight goals and 20 points.

With flames having 5 days off after tonight's game, I wonder if they call up shore to practice with big team in that time? They don't have to play him , and can even send him down after the 3-4 practices they might get in.
"I was in Toronto over the last week and saw him. I specifically tracked this guy real hard the last little bit. We feel we've got a good read on him," said Treliving.

"We talk about up-front trying to get bigger, but not just getting big shoe sizes, getting players that we think can play. I think this guy has some real upside," said Treliving. "A real smart player, an offensive player in college who has learned now to play both sides of the puck and move. He plays with pace but lots of range."
Quote:
"Great player," said Trocheck. "Two-way centre with a lot of skill and he's got great vision and a great IQ for the game. He'll get you points on the power play, blocked shots on the penalty kill. He's definitely the kind of guy that you'd want on your team."

"He's one of my best buddies from Denver so I'm extremely excited that he's now a part of the organization," said Colborne. "He's going to be a good player for a long game,"
Colborne says Shore can contributes in many ways.
"He's got a real good shot. He's like a dual threat though. He can also make plays. We played together on the power play in Denver and had some good chemistry. He's pretty good on face-offs, pretty big size down the middle. He's going to be an asset, for sure."
Quote:
"I'll talk to Bob (Hartley) on the plane tonight and the next couple days we'll figure out what the timeline is," said Treliving. "He could be coming right away. He might be a guy that's there in Adirondack for a period of time, we don't know. For us, it's adding an asset that we think has real upside."

I didn't know he played with Colborne in college, that's interesting. His pick up reminds me of the circumstances leading to Colborne's acquisition, so I suppose it's only fitting.
This is a great trade for us, it is amazing how many people are just saying ( Meh just a so so move ) Drew shore is a great prospect to have. As a few others have said I believe he is going to be tried out on the wing as well as center. I get that knight was good in the dot and that has been a really poor part of the Flames game for what seems like a century. Our Centers are actually getting quite good at faceoff's, the only reason our stats are still near the bottom is the nasty 35% that Granlund is performing at.
Shore is now our leading scorer on the farm team and was good enough to play for the US U17-U18-U20 and mens WC teams....He is a huge upgrade over Knight.

Great deal! Really happy about getting Shore. It's funny, it feels like the Flames are really focusing on acquiring College kids as of late. Reminds me of the mid 80s when they went the Suter, Otto, Hull, Ranheim route.
Nothing but the best for Knight. I remember when we signed him two summers ago, how excited this board was. He came in when our prospect cupboard was still a little low, and now it just seems like it was a matter of time before someone moved.

Highlights from the 2014 World Championships game between Germany & USA.
Shore with a beautiful goal at the 1:45 mark.
Gaudreau with an equally shifty goal at 4:15.
