What, half empty and leaking? That library is seeming to be a huge headache for everyone involved. I thought our leak at HSC was bad, but apparently it's been constant at the new library.

That's not really the point I was making. The purpose and direction of that library and why it was built is what I was referring to.
If 'leaking' and half-capacity are the issues you're concerned about, those are maintenance-related. Think broader than that.

Yeah, I knew what you meant - I was trying to be flippant, and obviously not succeding. It is interesting to see the change from the 1970s-era to the 2010-era libraries.
I feel for the librarians and people running the place - what a gongshow for the University.
As a PhD student I sat on the library committee at my old school (mid 2000s) and saw what changes were on the way. Even teaching is totally different now than it was even 5 years ago.

Library funding ‘almost secured’

Calgary’s mayor hinted yesterday that ground could break on the Central Library sometime next year, deeming funding for the $250-million project “almost secured.”
The mayor made the comments while exiting a public event at the current downtown library location.
“We have got a little bit of work to do on money and a little to do on the plan,” he said. “The centennial year (for the Calgary Public Library in 2012) would be a good year to make a significant announcement.”
The city has already publicly committed $175 million towards constructing the new East Village facility and the provincial government has looked at pitching in the remainder in combination with another cultural facility.

I'm pretty excited about this. Looking forward to how they make a better central library.

Does Skyscraper forum have any renderings up yet? I'd go look myself, but that website is the most unorganized cluster**** on the internet.

Hasn't been designed yet. Look for the launch of the design competition next year (most likely)

Looks amazing!
Lots of the photos are phone shots of tonight's presentation, but this one gives an idea of the c-train integration:

Books? Who needs books?
With that nastiness out of the way, where exactly is this? I think that view is "from" 9th and 3rd street SE, which I can find obviously, but what I can't figure out (not enough book readin'?) what is sitting in that spot right now, if anything.

That second design is pretty cool but it has over budget written all over it. I like the public outdoor space beneath the building though

Except for the massive amount of shade. I bet it would be totally unused and end up not being a very attractive space long term.
