#JeSuisAhmed Reminds Us That A French Muslim Died To Protect Free Speech

On the heels of #JeSuisCharlie, another Twitter hashtag is becoming a rallying point on social media for those mourning the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack -- #JeSuisAhmed.

The hashtag memorializes Ahmed Merabet, the 42-year-old police officer who was shot point blank on a Parisian street by masked gunmen outside Charlie Hebdo’s offices. He was among 12 people who lost their lives in what is being called the deadliest terror attack on French soil in more than 50 years.

I am not Charlie, I am Ahmed the dead cop. Charlie ridiculed my faith and culture and I died defending his right to do so. #JesuisAhmed

So sic that people die over storys and cartoons, Personally I think Ahmed probably laughed over the cartoons but in the end the world is forked because of religion and rascism. at least for now.

Being equal opportunity doesn't mean the cartoons portraying Muslims were any less racist or xenophobic. I'm not exactly sure how these cartoons really fit the criteria for satire either, other than if the definition of satire is simply that something is satirical when it is deliberately inflammatory to large sections of the public, or specific groups.

I kind of liked this tweet as well:

FYI satire is about challenging power, not belittling the oppressed.
EDIT: And before anyone goes for it, I'm not condoning the actions of the murderers. However, I think the publication should be recognized for what it is/was prior to the shootings.

Lots of information going around, but there may be people killed/hurt in a hostage situation involving the suspects in Northern France:

Scary situation right now.

Two brothers suspected in a newspaper terror attack were cornered inside a printing house northeast of Paris on Friday, taking a hostage and telling police they "want to die as martyrs," a lawmaker said.

Meanwhile, a gunman has also taken hostages at a kosher market in eastern Paris. Officials could not immediately confirm a link between the two incidents but the coincidence has spiked fears throughout Paris.
Yikes.

A police official says the man who has taken at least five people hostage in a kosher market on the eastern edges of Paris Friday appears linked to the newsroom massacre earlier this week that left 12 people dead.

The official, who was not authorized to speak about the situation, said the man opened fire in the kosher market, near Paris' Porte de Vincennes, and declared "you know who I am."

Paris police released a photo of Amedy Coulibaly as a suspect in the killing Thursday of a policewoman, and the official named him as the man holed up in the market. He said the man is armed with an automatic rifle and some hostages have been gravely wounded.

He said a second suspect, a woman named Hayet Boumddiene, is the gunman's accomplice.

Helmeted SWAT squads converged on the standoff. The French president ordered the country's top security official to the scene, an official in the presidency told The Associated Press.

I was merely responding to the argument that the magazine was targeting Islam. It does not appear that is the case. The magazine targets everybody.

I would, however, argue that you don't understand what satire is given your comment and the tweet you quoted. A lot of people are of the opinion of "I am offended by it, therefore it can't be satire". That is not valid. Nor is it true that the purpose of satire is "about challenging power". Satire is the ridicule of human vice and folly. And religion is one of man's greatest follies. Does Charlie Hebdo often come off as being offensive? Yes, that seems to be the case. Does that mean it isn't satire? Nope. Does that mean they shouldn't be allowed to publish? Nope. The solution to speech you dislike is more speech.

Unconfirmed, I would expect, and perhaps part of the cycle of FUD that permeates the early stages of these things, but the radio news this morning as I was driving in said at least two people are dead in the marketplace shooting.

I'm hearing conflicting reports of deaths at the supermarket (from CBC):

Quote:
One person was seriously wounded in the hostage-taking incident, a police union source told Reuters. The interior ministry denied press reports that two people had been killed. Police sources said one person was injured after being shot.

Ya, no confirmation of any deaths thus far.

Suspects in the Jewish market are demanding the free passage of the Brothers. Confirmed the two situations are linked.

Sounds like there were gun shots and then the flashbangs.

They probably wanted this over with before dark. Might even be over right now.

They do target everyone, but they make a special point about Arabs and Muslims.

Because I like using extreme examples to make a point... It's like the Ku Klux Klan. They used to target Jews, Catholics, natives, and others, but they made a special point of being the most vicious against Africa Americans. On the same subject, the KKK and other white supremacist groups used satirical images to ridicule black people in the past. Being satire shouldn't be a free pass.

This is not directed to you as I understand your point is simply about protecting freedom of speech and not about morally accepting what is actually being said (you even said that people should use their freedom of speech to counter it); but I do find it troubling that for many Charlie Hebdo's hate messages seem beyond criticism because they are protected by freedom of speech.

It was a moderatly big explosion; SkyNews twitter has a great picture of it; not a flashbang.

Assaults over at both locations. Outcome of both yet to be seen.

With these situations now linked it makes sense for the police to go into both at the same time.
