Yeah, thought I was seeing things, And Rushan is actually a great skater...a lot better than I thought.

I don't think I have ever made a comment about a seventh round draft pick before. Quite frankly odds of them making the nhl are not even worth my time posting about it.
Yet for a defensively starved prospect pool I have taken notice.
I thought Rafikov has looked great. Physical, can carry the puck, pass, and has a really good shot too. As for his skating? Awkward, definitely not a smooth skater but he gets the job done. He aint no bambi on ice. Big body too.
I cant belief I am actually following this young man, 7th round pick, and Russian too boot. I am impressed.

Best 7th round pick is Austin Carroll in my books, but I am starting to see something in Rafikov

When can he come over here? Maybe he can play in the CHL next season?
I wonder what it would take to convince him besides a crumbling Russian ruble?

Rushan the Russian played like a rock the whole Tournament. Nice showing for the only Flames prospect there. Ended up a -1 tonight but the Russians leaned on their top 4 pretty hard once they got the offense rolling.
Rafikov is the Russian Wotherspoon I think. Just a balanced, solid hockey player all around. I hope he comes over next season.

I didn't watch a lot of Russia during the tournament but he was definitely noticeable out there tonight. Would be curious to see his TOI but it seemed to me he was getting leaned on a lot by his coaches. Seems like a very well balanced D-man. Good patience and just seemed to move the puck into good situations.

As a 20 year old overage player it's hard to get excited about Carroll.
Rafikov is looking legit. Between him and Hickey I think they're going to make a lot of fans rethink the idea the Flames don't have anything coming on the blue line.

He will be 20 next year. I doubt a team is going to want to use an overage and Euro spot on one player.
The Flames have to sign him this year or they lose his rights.

no they don't... there is no transfer agreement between Russia and the NHL.
They have his rights until he is 27

Why does his age prevent you from getting excited?
Carroll is scoring without much help, while providing leadership and tonnes of grit. I get that lots of overagers do that, but he's got two things almost none the other ones do: speed, size. There's no detracting factor here IMO.
That isn't to say he's going to be a top two line guy, but he's destined to be a great role player IMO.

Because it's hard to get excited about an overaged played. I don't disagree that he's doing everything you said but.. overaged. Hopefully he is a legit late bloomer and puts it together though, that'd be fantastic. Don't know about destined...

not saying you are wrong, but by similar logic, it would be hard to get excited about Rafikov until he officially commits to playing in North America.

It's certainly nice to be discussing 7th round draft picks without either being a big long shot
