It is face guarding. That is pass interference by the letter of the law. The offensive "interference" is the offensive player clearly playing the ball and going for it. The defensive player never plays the ball. It is pass interference, and unsportsmanlike conduct, and should have been first down Detroit inside the 15. Instead here we are, with the NFL offices overjoyed.

That's what I'm trying to say...it was PI both ways. I would 100% agree that Dez should have been flagged though.
I'm pretty sure the refs have the ability to discuss the flag though, so if they came to the conclusion that it wasn't a penalty after getting all opinions, then so be it.

So the player on offense is allowed to have his hand on the defender's facemask, before the ball has arrived? Just to be clear.

And if the defender is, you know, playing the ball, the offensive player can't do anything except try to catch the ball, which is what he's trying to do.
It's a horrible call. You're a Cowboys fan and had it gone the other way you'd be incensed. Instead you're the beneficiary so of course you love the call. And regardless, Dez not getting a penalty is even worse and more egregious, so it's moot the Lions got badly screwed here.

So you're choosing to overlook the fact that his hand was on his face before he made a play on the ball?
EDIT: Again, I agree with the non-call on Dez. That's a call every day. I'm just disputing the PI call, which for sure will be the one talked about for the next week.

Catching the ball by facemasking the defender? WTF? Just rewatched it. Pettigrew's fingers were around the facemask of the defender before stafford even threw the ball.

Personally would rather have them not call that as a neutral fan, ball was underthrown and hit the defender low, shielding doesn't change that.
Plus they both had their hands on each other, and it could have been a face mask the other way.
As for Bryant being on the field that would be a ridiculous call as that happens lots on big plays.

The pass interference is maybe debatable (but every one of the former NFL refs are saying penalty), Dez is not and that's still a first down. Lions got screwed no matter how you slice it.

No matter what the proper call is, never seen a penalty announced, then 10 seconds later (which was missed on TV, just heard the crowd) reverse the call.
Also, right after the call, saw Bryant run on the field, no helmet, and protest the call. That should be a penalty there too.
If I were a Lion fan (hi Moon), I'd be livid at that.

I looked it up in the rulebook, both teams were guilty of PI. If Stafford had thrown a better ball I bet you would have seen the shielding penalty called. The Cowboy should have been called for not playing the ball (my mistake earlier on that one) and the Lion should have been called for a facemask/holding.

Gah, I was really hoping Detroit would come back so the "flag game" wouldn't be a thing. That really really sucks.

Horrible outcome for the NFL. The Cowboys win because of the worst picked up flag call in the history of the NFL. While I don't personally believe the league would fix a game that call will certainly fuel the conspiracy theorists as there's no explanation that can be made for picking up that flag which would have likely led to Lions points.
