Default Flyers violate CBA by travelling on Boxing Day

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers appear to have violated the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement by travelling during the recent holiday break, Sportsnet has learned.

The team departed for Nashville at 8:24 p.m. ET on Dec. 26, according to their flight log on FlightAware, during what is considered a restricted period for team activity in the CBA.

Article 16.5 (b) in that document states: “December 24, Christmas Day, and December 26 shall be off-days for all purposes, including travel.”

The Flyers refused comment through a spokesman when asked about the flight. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly did not respond to an email asking whether the team was under investigation.

It’s unclear what kind of penalty, if any, the Flyers could face from the NHL.

Will the ownership/management get fined? What other kind of action could he taken?

I don't see anything wrong with this. Flyers are supposed to fly.

Possibly forfeiting their 1st round draft pick, but that sounds a bit extreme. Probably just a fine.

There isn’t any precedent for this specific transgression. CBA violations have been relatively few and far between in recent years, although the Los Angeles Kings were fined $100,000 on Dec. 2 for allowing suspended defenceman Slava Voynov to skate with the team.

Oilers practicing on Christmas day oh so many years ago (previous CBA though) got nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Maybe bad weather was forecast for the next morning, and I would think that its not unreasonable for teams to leave for a destination/arrive at a destination less than 24h ahead of them playing a game.

It's a pretty damn easy rule not to break.

"Hey, can we travel on Boxing day? A lot of people consider that time off."
"I don't know, let me look... Nope! Says here we can't."
"Ok, thanks Jim!"

Pretty sure it doesn't matter unless one of the players files a grievance with the union, it is not as if this affects the league at all.

Seeing as this is under some sort of investigation I'm wondering if one of the players did.

Agreed. This is an egregious error, an overwhelming oversight, a disrespectful dismissal of decorum, and a ruthless reduction of responsibility. If a heavy hand is not used to deal with this the CBA might as well be ripped up.

Thought the same thing. They played in Nashville at 8pm.

Philadelphia:
High: 57°
Low: 32°
Precip: 0 in
Snow: 0 in

Nashville:
High: 47°
Low: 37°
Precip: 0.05 in
Snow: 0 in
Comment: An afternoon shower

Seems fine to me. More than likely it was negligence or incompetence wanting to take advantage of the extra day to avoid travelling on game day.

How the hell did anyone in the organization not know this? Bunch of idiots. I hope the book gets thrown at them, as I desire vengeance.

They should have to fly in cattle class commercial the rest of the season. Connections too. Eff it, they have to pay $25 per flight per bag.

Give their first round pick to the Flames to teach them a lesson.

If the players on the Flyers would have preferred to travel on Boxing Day rather than the 27, the day they had a game, does this even matter?

I'm looking at this and wondering if I could fine my wife for making me travel to the inlaws on Xmas day?
