Credit to the Isles for their play tonight. Stiffled the Flames for a lot of the game. It's another 1 goal game. We know they're not going to win them all and the Isles are in the thick of it with the best in the East. I'll take a one goal loss.

Very boring game, reminded me of the old wild games we had to endur. I agree with an earlier poster, watching Glencross take two strides in what felt like 30 seconds of hockey on,y to get the puck and promptly give it away was difficult. IMO his effort is a stark contrast from Johnny who you could see head down busting his hump to get off on a shift change. I am a Glencross fan, but his inconsistent effort from shift to shift, game to game is frustrating.

In the long term, this loss might inspire a mini-training camp focused on improving PKing & Power Plays.
I hope.

I think Byron also needs to sit a game. Switch him and Raymond for next game.

Most notably for me tonight was Glencross as well, for poor awareness and really bad skating.
Also, Bob Hartley ended up having our fourth and third lines out against the top line on many occasions for long periods of time, outside of the NUMEROUS icing calls.
While the game was boring, Islanders were fast and skated quite well. Had a lot of sticks in our plays and we certainly didn't get any lucky bounces.
Worth it to see the Gaudreau goal, not worth it to walk home with that wind blowing in my face.

Naw, bench Colborne. Every time he touched the puck it resulted in a turnover. It was brutal.

Just got back from the game. Really great effort, except for Glencross who was complete horse****. Not skating, all his passes were off, weak on the puck, turnover after turnover, no forechecking... definitely took the night off. On the other hand, Bouma was a total wrecking ball out there - was awesome to watch (as always). Hiller had a real solid game as well, he made the tough saves needed to keep us in the game, and you can't fault him on the goals.
Isles are a great team though, its hard not to like them. They seem to have a similar style to the Flames, although have the experience to make more of it. Just good, solid, hard working hockey from them. They were consistently beating us to pucks on the forecheck, and shut us down completely on the point, blocking shots like nobody's business. It was impressive to watch (and frustrating, given that's where a lot of our offense is generated). We sorely need Backlund back to play that shutdown role, the absence of a centre capable of doing that was very apparent tonight.

Back from game as well.
Giordano cross bar, and Halak save that went off the knob of his stick at the very end (Granland?) and that could've easily tied it up, or better in the last 4 minutes.
Mood in here would be a lot better with the team not playing any better or worse.
Isles are a good team, and Flames played a decently solid defensive game. 5 on 3 goal against and a pinball bounce that landed on Tavares stick.

Considering the Isles are an elite team this season thus far, the fact that the Flames held them mostly in check and only lost by a goal is pretty good. It could have been better of course, but it's encouraging to see them play good teams and skate with them.
Need to get a scoring chance or two before the 52nd minute though.

That's true, but the Flames generated absolutely nothing for long stretches. The Isles threw almost twice as many shots towards the net as we did if you don't count the powerplays. That's not a great recipe for success.
Having said that, that's been a problem all year. You'd never know the flames are getting that outplayed until you look at the shot charts. An interesting trend appears. They kind of "rope-a-dope" teams.
They have lots of stretches where they don't even attempt a shot at the opposition. Two stretches over 5 minutes long. That's not going to win you many games. They seem to be really good at capitalizing on the rush so they don't get 3rd, 4th shots in tight. But when the other team clogs things up the flames have no response

I was going to mention we're out of a spot right now, thinking that was where we'd inevitably be... then checked and it seems possible we could be back in if other teams started losing and we ended up with a tiebreaker or two. But yeah, kind of sucks going into 5 days off with a loss as the last thing to remember

Yeah by no means do I say that they're playing well, they need more then 1 scoring line + flashes from Monahan and Granlund. It's been a serious problem.
Tonight the shots weren't getting through from the point either, or was there a lot of zone possession time.
But they needed less "luck" tonight to get the tying goal than the tying goal against the Kings before Christmas. That Granlund chance was agonizingly close, I am not sure how many times they showed it on TV but every replay at the Dome it looked closer and closer than it looked live.

Hate's not the right word. He was noticeably bad tonight, so he's gonna get called out for it.

except the criticism of his performance tonight is warranted. He was the worst player for both teams and caused major problems for the offense throughout the game with bad turnovers and careless passes.
