Smart move.
Now Taylor Hall can play 1st line LW minutes and 2nd Line LW minutes without looking like he's taking an extra long shift.
Genius.

This is utter bs, and yes its pretty clear that the management is not trying to win games, and have just made massive steps to make their team worse.
At the end of the day the message that the players are getting from this trade is that losing is their mission.
The only guy at the end of the day that's going to want to win is Nelson even though trades like this will ensure that he's fired at the end of the year.
This is just going further in proving that Mac-T and their management group are a complete embarrassment.
Oiler fans do have my sympathy, there's no way that they should pay NHL prices to watch that team. If the Oilers had integrity they'd drop their ticket prices to ten bucks a game.
|
I do agree with a lot of what you say, driven by the miss management of this team to date. But if Calgary was sitting in last place today with our current team, and we made a fairly equivalent trade, we'd think it was a good move.
I get we are angry that the Oilers are continuously driving their team into the ground and getting high picks for it, and I agree the NHL should look at it. But we also can't expect MacT or anyone there to throw their hands up and go "sorry guys, we get this has been going on too long, and even though we are the worst team in the league, we are going to only make moves that attempt to improve the club right now". That would be pure stupidity even for them. As I mentioned before, they can't change the past, their team is going to need more time to get better, so making moves that COULD improve the club in the future is what they should do, and getting a 1st for an asset like Perron, who based on his comments would not be an Oiler beyond next season at most, is a good trade.

Where do you think the draft lottery came from.
The League investigated the Sens about deliberately losing games to draft Daigle.

Ok, Perron isn't a real top 6 forward IMO. Maybe he's a bubble top 6, for sure top 9. And you say at this stage in the rebuild..............but what stage is that. Clearly they are on ground floor. I agree with you, they shouldn't be on the ground floor still..........how they've managed to stay there for this long is something they hockey world will be analyzing for centuries to come. But the fact is, they are still on the ground level, so it is the type of move they should be making, as hysterical and unbelievable as that is.

I hope this trade will turn out OK for the Oilers. It is no fun at all to have such a train wreck as a team.
Oh, and welcome to the playoff race, Dave Perron.

The oilers should just go through the league and see what players don't have a NTC/NMC and target them as that's the only way they'll get them. There has to be a few good players that could be forced to play for the oilers.

Have to say, it's a good return. Though I'm sure they'll just end up ruining the kids development whomever he turns out to be. Also, all those players that were breathing a sigh of relief for not being in the top five and not having to worry about getting drafted by the Oilers just dropped a load.
But yeah. Disgraceful tank job. Should be fined. Oilers fans should be embarrassed to draft anyone right now, rather than getting excited from it.
If they ever find their way out of the basement, lets not forget to remind them for tge next one hundred years how many 30 place finishes they've racked up hmmmm? Haha. They're bottom five finishes could out pace their cup finishes in short order.

Magic beans, absolutely, in the sense there is no way of knowing what they will get, or when. Doesn't mean it is usesless or bad value, just not the type of value they claimed they needed (ie. actual NHLers, right now).

Perron has scored 20 goals and put up 40-57 points in all of the last three season's he's been healthy and excluding the lockout season. He's a top 6 guy.

Man I just can't bring myself to counter you after that comment. It's clear we have vastly different opinions on the player and trade.

Fair, I'll accept he's a real top 6 winger. He's also one that doesn't want to be in Edmonton, and a late first round pick for that type of player is good value for a re-building team IMO.

Perron is miles better than Klinkhammer.

The problem for Edmonton is that Perron is not worth a good prospect or better roster player by himself and the Oilers lack prospects of quality to make up the difference. Edmonton simply can't get the kind of help they need without looking at dealing a Hall or Nugent-Hopkins. Eberle and Yakupov would get good pieces, but the Oilers seem to remain delusional about the idea that those four can carry the team in the future.

I wonder how many failed seasons they can ride these guys? I expect as long as the current management group remains in charge as they seem determined to run with the square peg in round hole be damned style of building a team.

There is a great deal of irony on that front this time around though. The NHL was seriously considering making the lottery for the top three picks this year, but there were enough teams that expected to be bad enough that complained because they didn't want to risk finishing last and still losing out on a top-two pick that the NHL agreed to implement that part beginning in 2016. Thanks to the Oilers, those very same teams would have had better chances of getting McDavid or Eichel by allowing the top three to be chosen by lot this year.
So the teams that hoped to benefit by tanking will lose out because they failed to account for the world champions of tanking.

I wonder how good that has to feel, going from the worst run organization in pro sports to a perennial cup contender playing with the likes of Crosby and Malkin. For professional athletes who are already rich, it must be as close as they can come to feeling like a lottery winner

If Perron gets a 3rd line winger and a 1st round pick, I'm really curious now what the top scorer of a KHL team would net them.
Horak's been tearing up the KHL. I'm actually shocked to see his rights haven't been moved with any of these smaller trades. He actually has some value for them now.

Perron allegedly asked to be traded so I give him props for wanting to go to a real team and not just collect a cheque while getting top 6 minutes. That's the type of player I'm looking at acquiring if I am the Penguins.
