Yes, I was watching a post game interview on the NHL network and he said he'd love to stay, and would possibly get a contract renewal.

He's having a good season but yeah huge gamble.
Good news bad news for the flames. Glencross will definately want big money and term now.
But on the flip side the Ufa crop just got even worse if that was possible. If they make the smart move and rent him he will for sure get a late 1st round pick at the deadline... There are no more valuable assets for a rebuilding team and this is a good draft. Gotta convince him to waive his ntc

Funny to see all the different opinions. Florida signing nick for same length but a bit less is an outright steal for a player who has shown less in an NHL career, yet nick is more established, having a breakout career and is considered a gamble.

Bjugstad is a 6'6 220 center who is leading his team in scoring in his second full NHL season at 22 years old. Foligno is a winger and 5 years older, and while I don't want to take anything away from the great season he's having, he's also playing on a line with one of the best young centermen in the league in a contract year. He'll score 20 this season for the first time in his 6th season ... Bjugstad will probably do that in his 2nd season this year. Also Bjugstad will earn 1.4m less per year than Foligno. So yeah, I think the Bjugstad deal is a lot better than the Foligno deal IMO. The Foligno deal can still be good value, but he'll have to keep up his production for that and given his career numbers so far, it's not surprising that people are a bit skeptic in that regard.

So what you are saying is his contract is supported due to his younger age and height????

age, position and potential all factor in the contract decision, for sure. Florida wouldn't commit to Bjugstad for 6 years if they didn't believe he can be a consistent top 6 center. And again, I think the position plays a huge factor too. Everybody loves big centermen.

Florida is paying Bjugstad for four seasons of RFA status, and two seasons of UFA status. Columbus is paying Foligno for six seasons of UFA status. That difference is a big factor in the difference in pay.

I think it does. While Foligno is 5 years younger and therefore not a direct comparable, he's another upcoming UFA who has signed prior to the summer and that weakens the UFA class. If we ignore oldies like Jagr and St Louis, the only quality wingers who could test the market are
Justin Williams
Curtis Glencross
Carl Soderberg
Joel Ward
Michael Frolik
Mats Zuccarello
Drew Stafford
Matt Beleskey
Blake Comeau
and that's only now, I wouldn't be surprised if Williams signed a new contract in L.A. and/or Soderberg got traded and signed prior to July as well. Those guys are going to get paid and Glencross knows that. He won't give another hometown discount and he surely knows that he'll easily get a similar deal as Cammalleri last year (5 x 5) in July, maybe even more.

I think you have at least one too many much's in there personally. I know there is a divide on this board about how fans feel about Glencross so not everyone will agree. I am surprised by this deal mainly because I don't think Foligno is that special. But if he has chemistry with Johanson and Columbus thinks that he can maintain this year's level of production over the course of the contract, then it makes sense. Unlike Bjugstad, I didn't see him as trending up, just having a great season and likely to go back to the 35-50 point mark. Time will tell I guess.
I think it still impacts Glencross' value as well as any other 2-3rd line wingers on the market because a) it takes a potential UFA off the market as an option for other teams, and b) regardless of how much better or worse the player is - contracts like this help to set the range of the market value.

FYI he also led the team in scoring last year in his rookie season. People talk a lot about Barkov, and he may end up being a very good player still, but Bjugstad is a much better player overall.

I personally will give term to a 21 year old player showing improvement in his game over a 27 year old having a career year any dat of the week. I don't think Foligno is an elite scoring winger, and that this contract is 3 years too long. As for Glencross, if someone else wants to give him more than 3 years. Thanks for your service and good luck to that team.

The closest comparable is probably Alexander Steen.

horrible signing, they play hardball with RyJo and then give a guy shooting 22% a ridiculous contract
its the exact same situation as Steen last year, they gave him the big deal when he was shooting something like 19%
now that he's gone back to 7.4% this year Steen is on pace for 20 goals, not 45

I still never understood the hype for Barkov. They probably would have been better picking someone else.

Wow hasty contract for a guy with an average stat line of about 15 goals, 20 assists per season. These are Lee Stempniak numbers. You don't commit 5.5mil caphit to these players unless you a) think you're smarter than everyone else or b) this player is really the best you can do with that money. Wouldn't inspire confidence if I was a Columbus fan.
Being UFA doesn't mean a 3rd line player should get paid like a Patrick Sharp.

The cap has gone up $9M/team since Sharp signed. And like it or not, he gets ice time with Ryan Johansen on the top line for the most part, and gets the fourth most ice-time amongst CBJ forwards (1st among wingers). He's not a third line player right now.

I can see what they like about him. Defensively he's good, but still has room to grow. Offensively he has very silky hands and great vision. His shot leaves something to be desired, but he has very good passing skills. His skating isn't the greatest, but he has excellent size (6'3" 213lbs.). He's also just 19 playing his 2nd full season in the NHL. He's had an awful sophomore slump this year, but he's starting to pull out of his funk. He had 24 points in 54 games as a rookie 18 year old center last year, and was only -3 on a team with a terrible goal differential.
Barkov is going to be good, but it will take at least 2 or 3 more years before you see his full potential. Probably more of a Kopitar type player than anything. Bjugstad reminds me of a better overall Jeff Carter.
