So today, I'm sitting there at work browsing CP obviously

and my co-worker walks by for like the 300th time and she goes, "You're ALWAYS on that site..."

Which got me to thinking, has anyone ever said anything to you regarding your time spent doing "other" things while at work?

Also, how do you react when you hear people approaching your station? Do you quickly click to another screen? Or do you not even care?

Lastly I guess, if you could estimate, how much time do you spend at work doing stuff completely unrelated to work??

It varies quite a bit. As long as I get all my work done (and my personal goal is to not let my work delay anyone else's job) then I'm not given any grief. That, and the fact I think I'm the only one left in the city that works with a specific software package we use.

I'm also on call if any crap happens, so it all seems to balance out in the end.

I have a rear view mirror on my monitor. Plus I can hear people coming because I'm in a corner.

But it's funny, people ask me why I'm always on CP, then the next day ask me something specific about the Flames- because I'm supposedly the guy in the know.

I sit in the corner with a good view of both doorways. I'm certain my bosses won't mind, but I still close the window anyway

I've been getting caught alot recently.. but I dont' seem to care anymore I'm only here till the end of summer now.

Surfing the net is a BIG no-no in our office, everyone does it a bit but no one as much as me. I figure I split my time 50/50 between work and surfing (pretty much CP) unless its busy.. then its more like 60/40

Its funny this thread was created today because when I got to work this morning, I check my email and my stupid supervisor informs me that going on "Calgarypuck" is a security issue since it has "chat" capabilities. Is this true or is he just talking smack?

I got so ****ed and was not a joy to work with today. I took the day off CP, but if someone can confirm to me that CP is not a security risk, then I'm gonna be on it all day tomorrow just to **** off my stupid power-trip boss

There is a chat function. I wager there are about 384729375 other higher risk things out there though.

I had an intern type person working for me one summer and I let her take a picture of me browsing calgarypuck for some report she had to write. I probably check this site and my email at least once every hour every day.

I had an old cubicle location that was on an angle, right at a high traffic corner...I learned quickly to have two fingers over 'alt & tab', and that my last visited window was work...and how to hear footsteps coming quickly.

Now? I have more work and responsibilities (and a better workstation location) which are legitimately reducing my CP and other internet time. Plus, the new co-op students are getting caught playing games not filtered by the surf-control, visiting other messageboards, etc, so they get made fun of all the time for that. Fortunately for everyone, we work in an environment where everything is 'as long as you get your work done', so there's a bit of leeway...

Using Windows is a security issue, same could be said about using Outlook. I've never even looked at the CP chat but I'm betting it is a java applet based program so the risk should be pretty minimal. I would say that MSN messenger would be more of a risk.

Then again I could be wrong and it could open a huge back door. If you get a popup that says "And bingo was his name o" you know your screwed.

A tip for people looking not to get caught while surfing

Don't maximize the window for your web browser, but instead leave about an inch open on the side. Then have a maximized window with some work (or at the very least, a word document or something similar) open 'underneath'.

If you need to make a quick switch (i.e. coworker footsteps approaching), quickly click off to side in the one inch gap you've left yourself and the window is hidden immediatly.

No keyboard buttons to hit or tiny minimze icons to click on

I run dual monitor at work on a laptop with an LCD monitor... The laptop screen is partially obscured by the LCD monitor. Takes a few steps into the office before what's on the laptop monitor is visible. Most people are good about not barging in that far. That is unless, it's the CEO...

Are you a summer student? I could have interpreted your post wrong but it just reads a wee bit immature. It's almost like you feel you are entitled to browse calgarypuck while being paid to do work.

I guess we are CPaholics. I just enjoy chatting with people that share my addiction to the Flames. My work is not that busy and I am allowed to browse the internet.

About the chat thing, are they talking about an actual real-time
chat feature? Or do they mean that it is an "uncontrolled" forum?

I do know that some companies outright ban forums. (Including the
likes of Slashdot or www.digg.com) Some go as far as to ban
www.wikipedia.com.

The supposed reason is that they cannot control what is posted
in the forums, thus if it is offensive and someone else sees it,
who then is offended, they could have a complaint to deal with.

I always have my finger on the mouse, and I can be pretty quick draw when I want, also I always type my posts in word so when people walk by they think I am doing a write up or something, but mostly because I can't spell at all

I am carefull with what people see. Some times if a boss sees you on a site once he assumes you do it all the time. Have had the issue of not having enough time to get to a project and had the comment "well if you didn't surf..." Even though I would never check site other than down time.
