The issue isn't so much that the Oilers burned a year of Draisaitl's ELC, but that they kept him up past nine games when it was so bloody obvious that he wasn't ready for the NHL.

Can anyone recall a similar scenario? Where an 18/19 year was played past 9 games, but then sent down for the remainder of the season?

They need to send him down, he's looked pretty meh to me, and sure a lot of that has to do with his confidence. But they are going to have to figure out his skating.

Technically Ferland as well, though at the minor league level. 7 AHL and 3 ECHL games before being sent back. No idea how that would have impacted his contract status though.

Sometimes I do think that teams should be allowed to send players that still have CHL rights attached to them, down the AHL instead. Dominating junior probably isn't necessarily going to accelerate his development. It won't hurt it, like forcing him into the NHL might, but letting him test himself in the AHL would probably be a better scenario to either if it was possible.
Still, the wise thing for the Oilers would have been to send him back to the WHL a long time ago. It would have been the best option.

Matt Dumba, last year. Minnesota released him to play in the World Juniors. His WHL rights were traded from Red Deer to Portland and he was sent to Portland after returning from the tournament.

He was already 20 when that happened, so it made no difference for his contract status.

Dumba really only played 13 games though, whereas Draisaitl played 30+

I keep hearing this 40 game deadline thing, can anyone shed some light into what that means? I thought after 9 games, his ELC comes into effect, and they burn a year off. What does the 40 game mark signify?
Edit: Nevermind, should have actually read the Sportsnet article. So 9 games means first year of ELC burnt, but if before 40 games, the UFA clock (7 years) doesn't start counting down until next year.

1 year closer to UFA status.

More nepotism at its finest. They wouldnt send him back down unless they could send him somewhere where they have influence.
The Oilers are run more like a Mafia family than a business.

What a rough start to a career. The Oilers releasing him to go play in Kelowna is probably the best thing that has happened to him so far.

i should invite him over for smoked ribs

If you are Draisaitl (or his agent) wouldn't you be pissed if they sent you back after 39? I guess this d-baggery comes with the territory in Edmonton, but it is so laughable to think they are doing anything in the best interest of Draisaitl, as claimed.

Maybe slightly, but they must have known it was always a possibility.
The bonus for them is they burned a year off the ELC, and given Edmonton's predisposition of not giving bridge contracts - will likely be laughing all the way to the bank in two years.
