I think it is an open question on which one is less-worse, but the head scratching part of this deal is with the rumours of Draisaitl going down when his WHL rights are traded. The Oilers needed to add a centre for when this happens, but they did it by subtracting a centre. All they have done is move laterally.
You're assuming that the Oilers do the right thing and send him down.
That's likely not happening. That rumour was just one blogger throwing things out there.
I sure hope Roy is the missing link. Hopefully he returns to his Sabres glory days and carries the Oil on his back into the low 20's position of the NHL. A nice 10 game winning streak or winning more games than losi.... Nvm...
They needed Roy and Arcobello! They have no centres. They need centres. This is a lateral move at best but more likely a downgrade.
So they traded a 26 year old RFA making $600K for a 31 year old UFA making $1M.
I just...words fail me. Where do they find these people?
In other news, Arcobello now believes that there exists a loving and benevolent God.
Having Roy and Arcobello arguably makes the Oilers a better team.
A better Oilers team has less of a chance of drafting Connor McDavid.
Drafting Connor McDavid is the only possible strategy I see the Oilers pursuing at this point, based on their repeated actions.
Ergo, Arcobello is traded for Roy instead.
At least that's how I try to rationalize this. It's not easy... it's not like Nashville needed a centre in return for Roy, let alone one of Arcobello's calibre. But the Oilers found a way to trade him anyways.

I think it has gone beyond one blogger, but yes, we'll know by January 4 (40th game) if Edmonton finally stops the Draisaitl charade. The truth is, if PA were to trade Draisaitl's rights to Calgary, there's no way they would send him back, because Kevin Lowe is like that. But since the Oilers have connections with the ownership in Kelowna, the nepotism angle would lend credibility to that rumour.
As it is, it was a lateral move at best, and one that somehow makes Edmonton worse if they do send Draisaitl down since that apparently makes Lander the fourth centre.
Interesting how far Derek Roy has fallen. He was always a fairly reliable offensive threat in his time with Buffalo, which really wasn't that long ago.

It used to be inconceivable to me that they could lose a trade involving Marc Arcobello but, uh, the Oilers find a way.

How about this, same actor but to Craig MacTavish:
"I'll make you a deal, why dont you give me half the money you're about to spend and I'll take you out back and kick you in the balls and we'll call it a day?"

hahaha now i'm just picturing MacT as Vizzini and Poile as Wesley. Replace "choose the wine" with "manage assets"
