Super happy to see him get this recognition, and cool to see he's the first rookie in 14 months to get it. Looking forward to the rest of the season and seeing how he progresses.

He's one of the most exciting players in the league right now and I'm sure it will continue for many years at this rate.

Where are your thoughts on that draft pick from that day? Or are you just going to deride people with 3+ years of hindsight to sit on?

Does anybody remember the interview Ron McLean had with Treliving and Maloney during the Arizona/Calgary preseason game?

Maloney went out of his way to mention Gaudreau and joked how he'd love to have him if Brad didn't want him. At the time I found it curious that Maloney was so complimentary of a prospect he wouldn't know too much about. I now think it's just that Johnny impresses everywhere, not just flames fans. He soon was all over the highlight reels even in preseason. He's a special, special player

Hopefully this is just the first of many times that Johnny makes the NHL star of the week!

I was at the game on Saturday and loved it when the fans spontaneously starting cheering "Johnny Johnny" after his second goal.

Anyone else also share this thought and spontaneously giggle when it crosses your mind?

I won't share what happens when I also remember the other prospects on their way.

Maybe we should all be waiting for 3 years of hindsight before making definitive statements on any prospects.

Some of the comments from the Gaudreau thread based purely on his size are pretty embarassing for a forum generally full of relatively good hockey knowledge. Especially considering one of the best players to ever put on a Flames jersey was shorter than Gaudreau.

No they're not. Doubting a prospect based on size is a result of the VAST majority of the league being above average sized men.

Going back and pissing on people for it only now, when it seems like things are working out, is smug bull#### and it kinda makes you an #######.

I actually feel more confident when we take guys that are talented but small than I do when we take big oafy players with limited talent.

I hope every year we spend some mid round picks on small talented players even if their size makes them a relative long shot.

I agree with your last sentence for sure. But doubting is one thing, being definitive about it is stupid and annoying.

"Waste of a pick"

"Might as well have traded the pick"

Literally no insight on the player at all, no idea who he is outside of his size. Being cautious, or raising a concern about a diminutive (or any flaw you see in a player) player is perfectly fine. Writing someone - anyone - off completely (or going the opposite way and annointing them a future star for years to come) without watching a single second of them playing the game is just dumb.

What's that old saying?

Ah yes... "Don't judge a book by it's cover".

Either way, going back now and mocking people for it is a dbag move. Especially when a person has no record of opinion on the player until now when everything is peachy.

Yeah can't disagree with that.

All I take from a post like that is just a reaffirmation that there are few of us that know much about draftees, especailly the obscure guys in later rounds. There's just no reason to judge them at that point for any reason. If people could see into the future two of our 4th rounders would have been 1st rounders.

Is it really any worse than definitively saying things like "waste of a pick" without any knowledge of the player? They're both dick moves and neither do any thing to forward a good conversation on the player.

I think it is funny, it isn't trying to call out anyone specifically. Don't take it too personally.

The reality is anyone who was sure he was going to work out this well was just as out to lunch at that time....he was a longshot pick who has worked out.

But it's still fun to see some of the extreme opinions.

Well put. I had no intention to mock people nor anything like that (that's why I didn't include authors of those quotations). Everybody makes mistakes when it comes to evaluating prospects or acquisitions (e.g I was very skeptical about Hudler, wanted to draft Shinkaruk instead of Poirier etc.)
In my opinion, being able to laugh at your past mistakes or misjudgements is one of the first steps to freeing yourself.

Yes. One is being wrong. The other is using hindsight to #### on people.

I don't see it as ####ting on anyone. Just showing how wrong anyone could be in hindsight. Names would've been attached if that's the intent. Don't be so sensitive

He didn't use names, how is that ####ting on people? It's not that it's wrong, it can't be wrong at the time it's being said. It's blurting out crap that has no value or meaning other than to #### on the pick.

Yeah. It could almost be argued that those people should be shamed for jumping to such rash and uneducated conclusions. At least it may prevent people from spouting off with no knowledge of the player.

What I like is that the hilariously bold/sarcastic predicitons ("Next Gretzky" "Saviour") could end up being closer to the truth.
