I don't think it was Don's vote of confidence for his Calder contention that made Dion the way he is...

as much as I love Don Cherry, i'd bet money that he thinks Gaudreau is french Canadian.

There were articles written by non-Calgary writers about 20 games into the season that seriously made the case for Phaneuf being the best of the three.

The problem, ultimately, is that Phaneuf ended up as a higher-calibre Derek Morris. A guy who will play 1000 games but rarely make a significant difference because the toolbox can't fit all the tools.

As far as Gio and the Norris goes, I am not sure who votes for each award, but if both the Norris and Calder are voted on by the writers, I wonder if Gio and Gaudreau end up splitting the vote a little among writers who don't think Calgary should win more than one award (especially if we miss the playoffs).

Also hurting Gio's case is the knowledge that any voter from Montreal will pick Subban.

If it was handed out today he should win it with no real competition. Still a lot of season left to go however.

The Norris is for the best defenseman. Not most valuable defenseman. Playoffs should be almost irrelevant except in a virtual tie.

If so, how is that not too early to tell but the Norris voting is ?

If not, ignore this post.

Maybe it shouldn't matter, but it does.

When was the last time a defenseman should have won it but didn't due to his team missing the playoffs?

When was the last time someone won it without making the playoffs?

I don't think anyone was robbed of the Norris because his team didn't make the playoffs.

Some concrete evidence there. Can you name one that won it without there team making the playoffs?

Who are the other early candidates?

Off the top of my head:

Suter (lots of minutes but his team may miss also)
Doughty (don't think he's been as dominant this season)
?Subban/Keith/Letang (not as many points)
Phaneuf (haha)

I feel like I'm missing someone obvious....

I don't think anyone has had anything close to as good of a season, offensively and defensively.

Can you name one winner where it was apparent that he won because his team made it to the playoffs whereas someone should have won it but didn't?

You said it hinges on playoffs. The past winners have clearly been the best (or one of the best defenseman in the league).

Obviously being on a playoff team will make you a better player (stats wise as well).

Lots of hockey left.I still don't see him winning if the Flames don't make the playoffs, but I'm glad you're sure.

When did I say I'm sure he'll win it?

If he clearly has the best season out of all the defenseman in the league, he should win it. Regardless if the Flames make the playoffs or not as this award is for the best defenseman. Not the most valuable defenseman. If it's really close or a tie, I'm okay giving the award to the defenseman whose team made the playoffs.

With that being said, it's easier to have a great season on a playoff team rather than a non playoff team (obviously).

Calling Gaudreau 'Johnny Canuck' is a bit of an insult to the guy.

He is an American and has no affiliation with the Vancouver Canucks whatsoever.

I think Weber is the other leading candidate. He's the leader on a surprisingly good hockey team

For some reason I don't think POs matter much in the Norris voting. I have no proof because there hasn't been a case where one defenceman won over another because of it (or at least that was the stated reason) unlike the Iginla example.

I also don't think that Johnny being a Calder or Byng candidate will affect Gio's chances. If they were up for the same award, yes.

I don't get why people are surprised by Nashville. They brought in some great leadership for the forwards in Roy and Neal, brought in an electrifying rookie, unloaded some passengers, unloaded a coach that in hindsight may have been part of the issue all along by the way he used his players.

Their stellar D core is still intact and Weber is well... Weber.

Nashville is not a surprise to me and I think Weber has a bit better supporting cast than Gio does (experience wise). This is why I think Gio has a leg up on Weber. Not much but slight.
