Well, what I'm trying to say is that in retrospect, prettyhatemachine seems very ahead of it's time, which goes to show how forward thinking Reznor was and how much his sound has become a part of mainstream music. This album came out the same year as Nirvana's bleach, suggesting that NIN was one of the few 90's alt-rock acts who's success was minimally impacted by Nirvana, which I all found rather impressive.

There is really only one 90's Brit band and that is Radiohead.
Radiohead upto and including OK Computer great.
I saw them play U of C (Old Mac Hall) on The Bends tour. They were on for a good 2+ hrs, and killed it.
Amazing

I saw them about 2 years ago and they were dreadful. It was 2+ hours of haunted wailing. I don't think they played one song from The Bends. It was awful.

As far as metal goes at least we got 1990 and some classic Death albums. Nine Inch Nails were terrific live when I saw them, The Fragile is really overrated but Downward Spiral is great. And I figured I'd throw in Kyuss is awesome again, Kyuss is still better than most of the bands mentioned in this thread.
|
I think The Fragile is Trents best work. Into the void, the day the world went away (look up a live version, terrific), somewhat damaged, the big come down, the fragile, even deeper, la mer.....
Too many great songs on that one to list.
Edit: For those interested, live version of TDTWWA:

Billy Corgan Complains About "Middling" Reviews of New Album

"It's not a three-star ####ing record. Nobody believes it's a three-star record. Nobody! Okay, these people obviously did, so maybe I shouldn't be so absolute. But I've been in this business for 25 years and there is nobody in it who believes this is a three-star record. Nobody!"

I have to put in some love for Modest Mouse. Although they became more commercially successful in the 2000s, I think their 1990s stuff is their best and they did a pretty good job keeping grunge music relevant while also adapting and growing into more complex sounds. One of the few bands from that era to have longevity.
Blonde Redhead is another that really helped bridge the gap from the 1990s to the 2000s.

I haven't even heard it and I doubt it's a 3 star, probably a 1.5 star with screeching vocals and forgettable melodies. Just a guess.
Listening to it now, yeah not so good. Nothing really original. If it kicked off with a song that was memorable and blew my socks off I'd buy it, but nobody really does that anymore.

Oh hell yeah, I agree. OK Computer was good, but it was not as good as The Bends.
All albums after The Bends reminded me of musical wanking.

Is musical wanking like a circle jerk? I need to know before I comment.
Radiohead's high point for me was OK Computer, but they've put out some good stuff since, and I'll often throw on one of their "From the Basement" YouTube videos.

Haven't really listened to Radiohead since Kid A came out. I gave that one a shot, but never got into it and never bothered to try listening to anything since. I still like their older stuff though.
Maybe I would like their newer stuff as well because some of the newer bands that I listen to state Radiohead as an influence.

Oh without a doubt Radiohead are best Brit band of the 90's (Portishead runners up), but thankfully Radiohead isn't Britpop which is generally not that good (except for the aforementioned Pulp). I'd also say Kid A is something that requires multiple listens but when you get it, it's a pretty remarkable album. In Rainbows is also quite good and I'd say The Pyramid Song from Amnesiac might be the best song they've ever done.

My interpretation was that it's anything that strays from sounding the same on every single album, and involves actually trying to produce new sounds and techniques in your art.
Therefore, I love it.

Musical wanking is anything but creative. What you are talking about is improvisation and experimentation, wanking is no structure, no thought, repetitious fills that is a show of technicality and has little thought in regards to song structure or composition.
Weedly woo weedly woo really fast. It's Steve Vai in a nutshell.

I find metal is like that, it gets boring after a while.

I kind of view Pablo Honey and the Bends as Britpopish. A lot of it sounds like Suede with heavier guitars, especially the vocals.
I like Portishead a lot too. That whole Bristol sound is awesome, Morcheeba and Moloko are also good.
The UK was awesome in the 90s for music.

Radiohead was top notch, one of the very best bands of the 90's IMO. Thom Yorke's new group Atoms for Peace is pretty interesting as well, enjoyed their first record and waiting for a second one to see what else they can bring to the table.
As for the topic at hand, have to somewhat agree with Billy, never have been able to understand the appeal of PJ. I find the vast majority of their stuff to be fairly average, though I concede I am probably in the minority with that opinion. I think FF are a solid band, have liked most of their stuff but would but the Pumpkins catalogue ahead of theirs, if I had to choose. Billy does seem like an arrogant little prick though.
