Anyone have any experience with the Canon 70D? Finally going to move up from my entry level Sony a390 and I've heard/read nothing but positive things from the mid range 70D from Canon. Would love to hear from anyone here though.
Not in a rush, seen some good deals but will probably wait for boxing day/week to see what's out there.
I've had one for a while, really liking it! Image quality is great, AF is fast, definitely a great body.
I wasn't that interested in doing video, but have done some, and it's outstanding.

As noted earlier in this thread a big concern for me in grabbing a mirrorless camera is the ability to use my Canon glass with reasonable success.
To that end I ordered a Signstek/Ommlite EF-NEX "smart adapter" from Amazon and tried a few of my Canon Lenses out on my a6000 body. The adapter cost about $125, or a bit more than a 1/4 of the price of Metabones equivalent.
Aperture seems to be 100% with both lenses I tried. No issues at all, works just like the native kit lens.
Autofocus is a bit more of a rub. With my EF 50mm f1.8 it works reasonably well, but it's slow. Not gonna be firing off any of that 11fps sports shots with that auto focus speed. But it does work.
However with my wide angle EF-S 10-18 it's non-existent, or at least seems to be. The camera body seems to try to auto focus, but the lens's STM focus motor doesn't appear to be getting any signal from the camera. So with this STM lens at least, it's all manual focus.
Which with a wide angle doing landscapes on a tripod, is not a deal breaker.
For comparison sake I've tried to take the same basic shot with both my a6000 and my rebel XT from the same spot with the same settings and post processing. But I may have missed the shutter speed a touch.

To my eyes it seems the Canon lenses are a tad sharper on the native mount, but end up being miles ahead of the 16-50mm kit lens on the sony. The 50mm in particular smokes the kit lens in terms of sharpness and bokeh. But doesn't take advantage of the "world's fastest autofocus!" on the a6000.
At this point I kinda wish'd I'd skipped the kit lens and tried something with a wider aperture from Sony's lineup, but the camera body itself is still a ton of fun.
For the adapter, reasonable performance and image quality, but I'm glad I didn't drop $400 on it.
tl:dr: Edmonton is no good.

Going to chime in on this thread. Just bought a Sony a5100 (ILCE-5100Y) [Kit lens] E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS (SELP1650), E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS (SEL55210).
Sony's a5100 is in the same stable as the a6000, it has roughly 90% of the same guts as the latter, though in a slightly cheaper and smaller package.
IMHO even more 'noob-friendly' than the a6000. I have until now used nothing but smartphones/point and shoot cameras so this was a major step up for me.
Bought in Japan from BIC Camera (http://bit.ly/1tcCpYS) as they had a one week special that brought it's 89,880 Yen price down to 69,880 Yen - this is pretty much the price the camera is with the single lens kit it includes (E PZ 16-50mm). The fact it includes the second E 55-210mm lens was a major selling point; retail worth 33,510 Yen in Japan/$399 in Canada.
I just got this camera about a week ago and have been very busy with the new baby and work so I haven't been able to get out and use the camera (or the E 55-210mm lens) much yet. But anyway, here are some sample shots taken so far (taken straight from the camera in RAW, no editing):
If you want a new camera, see if there are any a5100's out there that come at a good price on Black Friday, I think most people would love having this camera.

i also have a 70d - i LOVE it!! i've had it a little over a year (i think... i got it when it first came out)
i was very, 'meh, whatever' about the video feature, but have learned to really appreciate it - it gets great videos of my little girl
i know one of the features that really drew me to the 70d is the fast shutter speed - something like 7 shots per second. fantastic for sports photography - which i do a lot of

Yeah the DigitalRev TV YouTube channel is pure gold. Funny as hell but also quite informative. Check out some of their How To videos as well, really does a great job of demystifying the technical side of photography.
It's great to see a Kai standing in a particular setting, telling you exactly what settings he's using and why "I'm gonna crank open the aperture to get that really shallow depth of field here" and then see the photo he snapped immediately after.
Their "reviews" are far from balanced, and they are more interested in making entertaining reviews than informative ones, but they always hit all the important marks.

I will admit now though that the kit lens just doe not do the body any justice. It just cannot d what I want it to do. I really need to man up and shell out dome cash for some good lenses.
Another nice thing about the video above is it gave us some good leads on some decent lenses at value. Sony just doesn't relinquish their lenses without charging more of a premium than most other lens makers. Hopefully I can find some gems like that Sigma.
What is a good camera that has a good quality mic on it? My digital camera now has awesome picture/video quality, but crap for sound quality. To the point it just sounds like fuzzy static. My cell phone has great quality sound wiht videos, but crap for viewing quality. Just wondering if anyone knows of a camera that gets the best of both worlds, preferable a smaller camera and not DLSR.

The A5100 is the A6000 young brother So I feel I got the #1'b'. The two cameras are so similar (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6K-Sppa8ow), take out the electric viewfinder, 11 fps vs 6 fps, hot shoe and some buttons and they are largely the same.
Please post share some pics in the 'Neverending photo' thread, it would be nice to see some more shots in there, especially from a fellow alpha camera
As for lenses, one sony e-mount lens I can recommend is the 55-210. Great for zoom, landscape, sports and macro. I use it far more than the 16-50mm kit lens, though the latter can certainly come in handy when on the run.

So as luck would have it my Canon 10-18mm crapped out on me about 10 days before my trip to Japan.
The repair time on it is 6 to 8 weeks so in a bind I pulled the trigger on the Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 ultra wide with the Sony e-mount for my a6000. Overall this is a great lens, and when my Canon comes back I'm gonna have a hard time deciding which one to keep.
It's a prime lens (1 focal length) with 100% manual controls for focus & aperture. But with such a wide angle it's hard to get things out of focus unless they are 1 foot in front of you. When you nail to the focus, it's indeed very sharp, which is why you buy a prime over a zoom.
Anyways a few sample pics, if you're looking for a native mount Wide Angle for the a6000, this one's not a bad choice. Provided you're comfortable with the manual focus.

After buying the a6000 last November, my Canon gear got all but shelved away. So after nearly a year of collecting dust I opted to sell it off to fund the purchase of a new native e-mount lens for the Sony.
I'm about 90% set on the 35mm f/1.8 at this point. But I'm wondering if any of you other a6000 shooters have any experience with it?
Or alternative recommendations for something with a similar focal length and f/stop?
