They both have August 13th birthdays, Forsberg is just a year younger. That kid can play. I know this is a Gaudreau thread but damn, Forsberg is lighting it up in Nashville.

Who is Forsberg playing with as linemates?

Hudler and Ribero or Neal is a wash. But Jooris or Granlund is not. On the other hand, Forsberg is playing centre (a tad harder).
Ignore the +/- stat. Forsberg has Rinne. Plus maybe the best overall d-corps in the league.

Forsberg is not playing centre. Not sure why everyone says that, he's been playing on the wing all season.

Yeah, plus/minus is better used for comparing players on the same team, and even then the meaning can be ambiguous.
These 2 are probably really close, but in the end I think the offensive stats are going to be the tie-breaker between the 2... but of course, Ekblad mght trump them both anyway. Forsberg, being a year younger, may also earn him more voting goodwill as well.

Well, I said it because he's listed that way. And I'ev not thought about Ribiero playing centre.

It shouldn't. Calder is/should be for best rookie, not best rookie for his age.

Not bad for a rookie season.

Bouma, Byron and Colborne are all listed as centres too even though it is rare they play that position for the Flames.
Also, the linemates are not "a wash". Ribeiro and Neal both have histories as close to PPG players. I like Hudler but the fact is he is having a career year because he is playing with Johnny, not vice versa.
We'll see what Johnny can bring the rest of the year. It's not just him adjusting; it's the team adjusting too. How many goals has Wideman tapped in just because he drives to the net when he sees Johnny with the puck? Others are starting to catch on and the team is also learning to give him the puck more. I see his pace increasing as the year goes on.

It should matter if all other things are pretty much equal though. If I see 2 players that are neck and neck for the Calder, if there is an age gap between them, I think it's natural that the people voting consider it. This it why I think Johnny will need to be the obvious choice between he and Forsberg, because if people have it too close to call, Forsberg likely gets more goodwill votes.

Forsberg has only taken 3 faceoffs this year. Don't think you can call him a center even if he is listed that way

Yes, but did he win all of them? A 100% win rate is pretty damn good for a center!

If that's the case then people might look at gaudreau's size and give him the goodwill votes.

Could Care Less

If somehow the Flames make the playoffs and Johnny is 65+points and/or leading or close to leading the team in points, I think that'll be huge for his Calder candidacy (is that a word?), even if Forsberg has more points and a better +/-.
I remember going to development camp two summers ago to watch our shiny new draft pick Monahan. That's when I started believing that Gaudreau was something special that we haven't had in years and years. Every time he touched the puck he was generating offensive chances and you could just feel the (small) crowd's energy when he had the puck. Monahan was a good solid all around player with a great release and a good nose for the net. Came away super excited about both!

People are talking about the Calder coming down to between Gaudreau and Forsberg, but I think Ekblad could win if he continues his strong season.

I'd definitely have Ekblad as well. Forsberg at least has a good supporting cast behind him, Ekblad and Gaudreau do not have that.
If the voting was held today, it's Forsberg. But I do think Ekblad will take it, especially if the Panthers make the playoffs after just finishing in 29th last year.
