Yeah, I would imagine that if a player is coming off a four-month rehab from major surgery, the league would pretty much rubber-stamp any request to send him for a conditioning loan.

Calgary tanked just when the schedule became a little tougher, and it's not going to get any easier in the coming months, so going by their track record hoping for playoffs is a pipe dream
That's why I'm hoping Treleving doesn't even consider the playoffs when looking at moves to make, for Bennett and otherwise. Maybe it's good the tank happened when it did, instead of later when ownership saw playoffs as a real possibility and pushed to make shortsighted moves to try and get there

Well if the Flames can come back against the defending Stanley Cup champions after being down 3-0, I'm guessing there is at least the possibility they can gain 3 points on 47 games. Well with the win it's 2 points in 46 games. This team has showed heart and the ability to not be counted out.
The Flames brass hasn't done anything to show they make knee jerk reactions during this rebuild. They are trying to build a team that will compete for multiple championships. If they make the playoffs this year it's not going to harm that.
When Calgary lost all those games it was not a tank. It's ludicrous to suggest it.

They tanked because they were playing terrible hockey for most of a month, it doesn't have to be intentional. And if not for the heroics of a rookie they would still be digging that hole, the rest of the team was still pretty awful. As long as there are so many passengers in the lineup nothing will really change
But unlike years past I actually watched every game of this losing streak, simply to watch the Johnny Hockey show. And I'll probably watch every game next year to see if Bennett can do the same. I love the youth movement on this team and do have some hope for the future because of it, but until management jettisons the dead weight I don't think the playoffs as a realistic goal

For the love of god can you just stop? *We are rebuilding*. What part about that is difficult for you to understand? Unreal.

Thanks Capt. Obvious, that's my whole point. I'm not getting any playoff hopes up because it's unrealistic, I'm more interested in watching how the young guys play. And I'd much rather watch guys like Ferland and even Baertschi play instead of seeing guys like Raymond and Stajan suck the life out of this team
And why exactly is a Jets fan so concerned with how the Flames rebuild is going?

Check the join date, there were no Jets at that time. I've been a Flames fan first, since the Jets dissolved.
That means I've been around long enough to see your enduring pessimism and whining over the last several years, and you've kicked it up a notch this year. It's dreadful. Every post you make seems completely devoid of the fact that this is year two of a rebuild and that these challenging times would be a part of the process.
You really need to take a brake. All you do come in here dumbfounded that the team is largely struggling this year.

To me "tanked", or tanking, means intentionally throwing the game. I think you are using it incorrectly.

Every team that isn't playoff bound is now 'tanking.'
Apparently being cruddy is no longer a result of a lack of skilled players, but trying to suck
Buffalo was tanking and a joke 15 games ago too, until they weren't....

You can watch the young guys play AND the team can make the playoffs. They're not mutally exclusive.
Even without Ferland and Sven, a large portion of our roster is under 25.

Wow I'm glad the Flames are not taking your short sighted approach to developing our young talent. Look North to a team that tried to build their team with your perspective. Our management is smarter than that and they recognize that we need seasoned vets in the lineup and in the locker room to teach our kids how to be pros. Sure I'd much rather watch Ferland and Baertschi as well but I'm more concerned with making sure the development strategy for them is adhered to regardless of where we are in the standings.

You have 6 regular fwds who are vets: Stajan, Raymond, Glencross, Jones, Hudler and Bollig. Three of those play minimal minutes, though Stajan takes important d-zone faceoffs, and Raymond gets the odd upper line tryout (then is returned during the game). You also have McGrattan who makes little and plays little.
I don't think Glencross will take the contract the Flames will offer, so he's probably gone at the end of the year, if not by the trade deadline. McGrattan is also a UFA and I doubt he will be renewed. That's two roster spots at fwd.
Bollig doesn't make a huge salary but he has, and I don't care if he plays 4th line or gets waived. Stajan's contract is lengthy - I don't see him being traded, so live with him folks. He could be bought out in a couple years - no need to do so now. Hudler is obviously fine and I like Jones when he's not injured - he's a big body that drives the net, which this team doesn't really have yet.
Raymond is a bit of an issue. He plays wing, is not terrific defensively, and is not a PK specialist, a fighter or agitator. or a set-up man. So unless he scores he's not as useful (unlike a Stajan, Byron or Bouma or even Bollig who have a few other uses). And he's only scored in three games that I can recall. I hope he plays better and improves his value. He looked somewhat better last game. His term is through 2017. He's a buyout candidate IMO if he can't be traded at the deadline or the draft.
Backlund you qualify. He had a great year last year, is a good 2-way guy and because of his injury I don't think his next contract price will be huge. If you can sign him for term at a good price, you have a valuable keep or trade asset.
So I would see 3 forward roster spots open next year, depending on whether they re-sign Byron and Bouma. They will undoubtedly re-sign Jooris and at least one of the two Bs.
3 roster spots = Bennett, Ferland and Poirier.
You'd look like this up front
Ferland, Monahan, Jones
Johnny, Bennett, Hudler (maybe switch Ferland with Johnny to even out the muscle)
Granlund, Backlund, Poirier (this line has potential)
Bouma, Stajan, Jooris (not crazy about this line, but I wouldn't be very worried in their own zone).
Bollig sits, plus Byron platoons in.

I would love those lines. Here's to hoping Bennett and Poirier work out as well as Johnny and Monahan.

That's like wishing the arena update thread would only be bumped with arena news
All we really know re: Bennett is that rehab is going well, his shoulder should be fixed permanently and he's going to start skating in the new year.

'Tanking' tends to insinuate intent.
I dont see any evidence of that and its contrary to all evidence that we actually have and the effort level that we've seen.

hahaha!! I clicked on this thread too to see if there is any update on Bennett but of course like any other thread people tend to go astray on the topic and start talking stuff that is not related to the thread.
I think it is more March or April since they said he'll be gone for 4-6 months. I think the Flames brass will be careful with Bennett and let him heal 100%.

I seem to recall the surgeon saying the injury was not as bad as it could have been. Perhaps he'll be ready sooner than that, OzSome.

to be fair, tanking is an organizational decision, not a player personnel decision. Pros will always try.
... well most anyway.

Um. Having witnessed the phenomenon that is the Edmonton Oilers I'm going to have to respectfully disagree.
There are pros that mail it in.
