Well, personally I would prefer someone chewing rather than smoking because it doesn't impact my health.

As long as it's not on the ice... don't care.
I used to play hockey with a guy that would chew and spit on the ice as he was playing.
That was disgusting!

Huh, I had no idea they were doing that. Chewing seems like such an arcane and disgusting habit (kind of like people who feel the need to spit all the time), but at the very least, its one of those things where the only person you harm is yourself….so if they want to do it, it's not really fair for me to say no.

As long as it's legal, I don't see what the issue is. Grown men do what grown men want to do. Are we gonna raise an eyebrow every time someone gambles, drinks alcohol? This thread is kind of ridiculous.

Burkes been shown in the press box for years with a chew in. I actually had no idea Treliving did though.
It is used much more than most of you may know. There are numerous interviews conducted where a player has a chew in. Also, I don't know any sports that have banned it as previously mentioned as much as rules are put in place for it to not be "advertised".
It is possible to be a "respectful chewer" where nobody knows your doing it, you use a non see through bottle / cup and throw it out after. This is the category I would put Burke in.
Has Sather's cigar ever caused a issue before?

It did cause a ruckus a while ago, but it isnt lit. I guess as long as hes just chewing it (<- See the irony there??) then most people seem to be cool with it.

There is nothing wrong with having a big old chaw in public so long as you follow the cardinal rules: (1) dispose of your own cup/can/bottle. do not let a server take your cup for you (2) minimize splash/spill risk - put a napkin into the cup if the cup has no lid (3) swallow it before you spit on the ground.

Who cares? I think it's a pretty gross habit, but as long as they're spitting in a bottle or cup there's no reason it should bother anyone.

If they were in my clinic, I'd tell them very firmly to stop one of the most disgusting habits. But one quick shot of them up in the booth possibly chewing something is not an issue, nor does it exactly promote the issue. Way I see it, if your team is on their way to an 8th straight loss, go ahead and chew a little.

1. It's legal
2. Adults can do what they want
3. It doesn't hurt anyone else, as long as you dispose of the "results" properly
4. Just seeing someone do it doesn't make other people (including children) want to do it
I'm talking, of course, about picking your nose. All of these things are true, but you don't want anyone to see you doing it, and you certainly don't want to be on national television doing it.
I think chewing tobacco is pretty much the same thing. Watching someone spit into a bottle, and holding a bottle of brown spit, is gross. Just as gross as watching someone pick their nose. You look like a bit of a rube if you are doing either. Especially if you know you could be on TV.

Nice, why is it that some on these boards can't have an adult conversation? I asked an honest question to see where people sit on the subject that is all.
Personally I feel that they shouldn't be doing it at the arena, nor anywhere cameras are, it just sends the wrong message imo. I also think someone who has gotten to this level of management should know better and try to kick the habit and certainly not do it where the public is going to see it. Just my opinion, I can still have that right? Does it make me a sissy, far from it!
