Glencross was one of the few flames showing anything last night in the first period.
Didn't have a problem with his game at all.

The problem with effort, is you need skill to match. Jooris is an amazing plug, but he doesn't have the finishing skill required for a top line center. He's made huge strides, but he can give all the effort in the world and it's not going to turn him from hard-working to high-skilled.

While he may not be a top line centre, he is certainly not a plug.

Meh. A few hits in the first couple shifts, then he faded into the background along with 75% of his forward mates.

3rd in all forwards for goals with 8 so far. And he's not having goals go in off his skate or backside. At least two are breakaway goals IIRC. A hat trick. And some of those goals were before playing with JG and Hudler. His faceoff percentage is right around the league average as well.
As I said, he's got more than "plug" in his finishing. He's got a sense of where he needs to be in the slot and other scoring spots on the ice, and that's with the Flames top two skill players...and has shown the wheels and forechecking ability to create chances on his own.
#1 center? No, but him having stints up there, allowing the Flames to put the #1 center in Monahan on a different line to spread things out, is far from hurting the team. Given the effort and effectiveness of Stajan and Colborne, Jooris has definitely shown a lot more spark, energy, and consistency than the above two since they got back. Backlund, when he gets back, better also not expect his role to be given back to him without playing at a high energy and consistency level.

I'm not sure what the hockey definition of plug is but Jooris was playing way over his head during the first part of the season. He has settled down to what everyone expected him to be, a speedy hard working player that is lacking skills to produce points on a consistent basis. If the Flames are a legit contender in a few years Jooris shouldn't be seeing any ice-time on the first two lines.

Oh yeah, I know. But if the puck is obviously going to go in anyways, may as well at least get yourself on the highlight reel for doing something interesting.

Still so impressed with John Gaudreau. Amazing how lucky we are to have this kid on the Flames. 21 years old, so much room for this kid to improve.

I don't see the need for panic or major changes. You could see that confidence has ebbed away when the Flames ragged the puck for the last 45 seconds of regulation time rather than trying to attack for one last scoring chance. Getting one point was more psychologically important than winning. Maybe they can get back to playing their game now that they've broken the goose egg.

I don't know if it was visible on TV, but the canucks were hanging back as a 5 man unit until about 8 seconds left when they sent in one forechecker.
Vancouver played much better defensively than Calgary did last game, and a big part of that was just hanging back and not giving a clear path through the neutral zone.

I find it hard to believe that Raymond could not even touch that pass back to him from Wideman. I can see him flubbing it since he's not a point man but to not even get a stick or skate on it is on a whole different tier of incompetence.

The part that sucks, is that for the most part (besides EN goals) most of the games have been losses by 1 goal.

Thats a positive trend for me. No team is blowing them out except for St.louis legitimately.

I was at the game with great seats for perspective on this goal...there was 100% NO WAY any Flame was getting to that puck.

He was standing away from the boards, probably expected a possible pass back to him. Unfortunately, instead of it coming straight back to him the angle Wideman shot it off the boards was short. Maybe Wideman should have stayed back at the blueline instead of being up so high on the play, maybe the refs should have blown it down when Canuck player touched it enough to get credit for goal. All sorts of actions contributed to it being a messed up play.
Also, one of the first things I learned playing hockey is the puck travels faster then a person can skate, so by the time the Flame players turned around and realized it was heading to the net none of them was going to catch up to it

Raymond is soooooooo afraid of contact since he came back from injury.
Stajan isn't sure where he is supposed to be on the ice. Sad really after so many years. THIS ISNT A COACHING ISSUE.
Bottom D pair has sucked all year. Not surprising considering the state of the team. A single addition to the top 4 would help sooooo much.
Overall, the offense from the top-4 defense has made the forwards look so much better than they are.
Happy with what I see from the forwards. (Except see Raymond/Stajan comments above).
What a find Jooris is! Honestly.
Conclusion: the losing streak sucks, but the situation isn't dire. Don't be mad. Don't be sad. It isn't dire, just enjoy the highs and endure the lows! We are on the right path. I'll put down $500 right now that we win a cup before the oiler or canucks right now!

We are going to beat the Kings. I'm sure of it. In fact I've put $20AUD on it.

Just saw the highlights now. Wow. The first goal was truly embarrassing. So glad I wasn't at the game when that happened. Feel bad for all the Flames fans in attendance.
