Nothing new discovered here; several CJHL leagues - including the AJHL - have effectively used 3 on 3 for years.

That is a massive improvement for the AHL, however 24.7% of overtime games going to a shootout is still 24.7% too high.

I feel like they can make the shoot out numbers even lower by increasing couple minutes in overtime. 7 minutes is such a weird number for a period length. Why not 5 min of 4v4 and 5 min of 3v3.

Love it. Next year I want to see it in the NHL.

Don't like it. 3 on 3 is just as gimmicky as the shoot out, maybe even more so. Welcome to pond hockey.

It may be gimmicky, but hardly more so that the shoot out. At least it's pond hockey, with two teams.

What i don't like is the "7" minute overtime. It seems like such an arbitrary number. I could just be OCD with this, but it seems really strange to go with a number like 7.

I think what I would prefer to see is 5 min 4-4, and 5 min 3-3.

If they went that route, ditched the otl, and just went straight Win/Losses, I bet they'd get that Shootout number down to about 2% of games. Teams playing for ties to ensure the OTL must at least double the number of games going to OT and is the real problem they should be trying to solve.

staged maybe, but gimmicky no

Teams can get back to back coincidental minors in any NHL game, so it's within the rules.

I hate the shoot out so I'm all for any of ...
- 3 on 3
- longer OT
- just go back to ties

If they must go with 7 mins.... my OCD would prefer 4 mins of 4 vs 4, buzzer, then 3 mins of 3 vs 3.

7 minutes? Just seems so odd, 5 minutes or 10 minutes makes just as much sense.

Everybody knows that 7 is the magic number:

7’s the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that’s the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin’ on a branch, eatin’ lots of sunflowers on my uncle’s ranch. You know that old children’s tale from the sea. It’s like you’re dreamin’ about Gorgonzola cheese when it’s clearly Brie time, baby.
Step into my office.
Why?
‘Cause you’re f&*%n’ fired!

In the AHL do they not do that dry scape? The NHL didn't seem to like that at all this year.

That being said the NHL has a hate on for the tie.

I wonder if they are coming at it from the wrong angle.

Bring ties back in, but allow for a bonus point for a win by a certain number of goals (I have no idea what that is, just blue skying here). To encourage the losing team you could maybe offer a point for losses by only one goal.

This is really off the top of my head (I am sure I will get flamed) but:

3 points for a win when you score 4/5/6 + goals
2 points for a win when you score less than the number for a 3 pt win
1 point for a tie or if you lose by only 1 goal

AHL does still use the dry scrape before OT starts.

Just say no to ties. Play until some one wins like the playoffs

I could see the NHL adopting a 10 minute split of 4v4 and 3v3 instead of 7 minutes.

This is a big step up in my books, especially with how the Flames can play on open ice. 3 on 3 is a very standard drill during practices for all teams. It would be interesting to see some of the set plays that inevitably develop.

Oh and hell no to ties. This isn't soccer and I don't want to go back to tie games in hockey.

Don't like the "first whistle after 4 minutes" business. Too random. The 3-3 could end up being one minute, or zero minutes quite easily.

You want no ties in hockey? Easy, just ban goalies during OT...
