Not sure what you expect Bollig to do? He challenged Depres, Depres declined to fight.
So many posters whine that Bollig took a bad penalty, can you imagine if he took 2 5 and a game? Or something approaching Bertuzzi levels?
Welcome to the current NHL, nothing can be done but take it out on Malkin.
Letang could have had one penalty per shift, refs won't protect Gaudreau. I may be in the minority but I would have liked to see Bollig and Engelland go after Letang and Depres, penalties and lost game be damned.
Damned straight. If you're going to lose then go down in flames.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Yeah, I wouldn't say we would need to bring back goonery, but we do need to protect Johnny at least. He is an extremely talented player who is going to have issues of players going after him.
Most of the other guys can hold their own, but after a questionable move by the opposition, yeah a challenge or a facewash would be warranted but you can't just jump a guy.
Also with Poirier and Bennett coming in and Ferland growing as a player, we're gonna have some tough kids with solid skill.

Why can't you jump a guy? When someone crashes into the goaltender or makes a dirty hit/play on someone like Johnny... Grab the guy and start swinging... The guy is getting into a fight whether he wants to or not. That's the point. Going up to him and politely asking for him to pay up for what he did makes no sense.
I'm not saying pull a bertuzzi on him... But the second you grab him he'll know he's in a fight. I'll take the penalty for it every time if it means protecting the future of this team. I've already seen guys make way too many cheap plays on Johnny this season.
I want the consequences of hitting Johnny to be so definite and dire that when a guy hits Johnny in any way... The guy immediately looks over his shoulder expecting to get jumped by somebody. That doesn't mean it has I happen every time gaudreau gets bumped or hit... But I want opponents to think about it. If mcgrattan - arguably the toughest guy in the league - started playing that role I truly believe it would make guys think twice about even touching Johnny. And a split second of hesitation from those guys is more than enough time for gaudreau to work some magic.
Someone should have jumped in on that idiot Dupres.
And if someone slashes or Goons up our smaller players, you do the same thing to theirs and then let them know that its going to get worse if they keep doing it.
Johnny should be the safest person on the ice. When Phaneuf cross checked Gaudreau either Phaneuf or someone like Kadri should have immediately been mistreated.
When Letang took his cheap shot at Johnny he should have either been put on his a$$. Or we should have crushed one of their smaller players and then skated by the Pens bench and told them that for every Johnny that's attacked 10 of theirs will be destroyed.

I think we are all dreading the day when someone takes a run at Johnny and possibly injures him. However, I think if that happens I believe there are plenty of players on the team that won't let that go unpunished.
I agree there are many of our younger players in various stages of development, with size and skill, that will eventually add to our team size and toughness. In general, I would prefer to wait until they are NHL ready than trying to make trades in order to make it happen sooner.

That's the problem we're discussing here. It shouldn't have to take Johnny getting hurt for our 'truculence' guys to do something. That phaneuf slash, for example should have elicited some response.
Calgary is clearly small and weak, especially on the wings.
Without Bouma in the lineup, the physicality of the entire team plummets.
Don't need a bunch of goons, need top 6/top 9 forwards with a combination of speed and size to pressure opposition players to make quick plays that lead to mistakes.
Letang hitting your softer players? Need several forecheckers who can get in and pressure him physically, that's the only answer. More guys in the Ferland/Bouma mold and less in the Bollig/McGrattan mold.
Shean Donovan. Chris Clark, Curtis Glencross a couple of years ago, Ville Niemenen. Guys who can skate who get in on the forecheck and are just as much a threat to smash you through the boards as stickcheck you.
It's why I wouldn't mind Shane Doan or Christ Stewart or a combination of them both to show up on the roster shortly. Too damned small and soft on the wings. Colborne and Raymond's return make it even more noticeable.

No offense.. but this stuff just doesn't happen anymore and hasn't in about 25 years.
Not sure that's true. Look how many fights start or try to get started when a guy lays a nice legit body check on a star player. Not saying that's right but when we get slashed in the hand or hit in the head there should be retribution.

I guess it's how the offence is viewed at the time. Crosschecking and slashes happens frequently to many players, and it may not have been viewed as being that serious by our other players.
Also, could it be that we may all be relatively oversensitive when it come to Johnny? IMO, in general, he has been treated rather respectfully by most of our opposition to date.

Agreed. More concerned with the Smid hit. Thought someone should have stepped up. And can't believe that hit didn't get despres a phone call.

Agree with this. Contrary to what most people here think, it's not that easy to say "we gotta do this and we gotta do that". There are repercussions. Sending a goon out against a far more skilled player will most likely result in crippling the team in the short run, and quite possibly the long run.
Well we're still missing Backlund, who pushes Stajan out of the lineup and plays a stronger game these days. Other than that we can pray for Ferland to come back or Poirier to get a chance, or hell even Sam Bennett.
