Not a rumor. It was weird how Cox brought this up as a possibility only to shoot it down. Strange non-story.

I'm not sure he's needed anymore. I get the reasoning for having him as PoHO, but in reality, it's kind of redundant in my mind. Treliving calls the shots, and if long term stability and vision is the reason for the PoHO, I don't see Burke staying longer than Treliving anyways.
I don't see Burke as any great benefit to the team I guess. Not a negative, just... there

And yet it's Burke's holiday roster freeze that's been put into effect.
Treliving doesn't call all of the shots yet. Maybe most of them, but I don't think he's out on his own quite yet.

If he wanted to GM a team so badly that he's willing to ditch Calgary at the first opportunity, why didn't he just make himself the full-time GM when he had the chance?
I don't buy this story.

Murray Edwards addressed short term GM pressures vs strategic Burke function on Hockey Night.

I think this seems improbable. The future for this team is very bright. If he sticks around for a few years, and if things go the way they should for this team, Burkie cements his legacy as a Hall-of-Fame worthy team builder...

I buy the story. Burke isn't getting any younger and I think he still has the yearning and fire to be the guy who is front and center in building a team. Burke has accomplished enough that in a few years he can name a successor and step back into more of the type of Presidential role he is in now. Slightly off topic, I wonder if Ottawa will have a job for Burke with Murray's health in decline.

This was well discussed. Burke himself admitted that he wanted to be the GM and it took some convincing for him to accept the role Edwards and King wanted him to be in in the first place. In other words, Burke wanted to be GM, the Flames convinced him to come to Calgary to be the President and hire a GM. Burke accepted the assignment and therefore he had to hire a GM because he wasn't hired to be the GM (Burke said as much). Sure it is possible that Burke simply needed to think things through and realized that it is becoming the new norm in the NHL where you have a President of hockey operations who is not the GM who is involved in decisions affecting the on ice product.

The thing I like about the PHO position is a sense of stability. When Feaster took over from Sutter he appeared to go in the opposite direction of Daryl. Sacrificing size for skill and in his time he quickly turned the flames into one of the smallest teams in the league. He did add some high end skill which was good. What the organization needed was Ken King to take a step back from hockey and work on a new building/Olmypic bid/MLS team or whatever Calgary Sports and Entertainment is striving for. Enter Burke an experienced GM with a winning track record and a highly respected member of the GM fraternity. To me Burke should be outlasting Treliving and get to hire at least one more GM before King would consider a change at the PHO level.
I hope Burke stays from everything Conroy and Treliving have said he is a fantastic mentor and resource for our young management team. I love the structure of our upper management right now and really hope it doesn't change especially before the rebuild is done

That would be awesome, finally Sven would get a spot on the roster and the team would stop being so handcuffed. Might make the playoffs finally.
