Conroy referred to Potter in an interview this past week as "an NHL defenseman" so its not a surprise he gets the callup.

By all accounts Potter scrubbed really hard to get the Oiler stink off his body, he deserves the call up.

He better get suspended for that silly hit. He torpedoed Ladi Smid in the head with his elbow. He definitely jumped to hit Smid. I can't believe the ref didn't make the call and he was close.

Until we perhaps see otherwise from Potter, but Diaz and Engelland are what they are.

Smid is fine when he's paired with a decent player, look at his entire career up to this season. Engelland just isn't that player.

I believe Conroy referred to Diaz as a pizza delivery man. Because he delivers pizzas into our high slot all night long.

Potter just has to be better than Diaz. I cringe when that clown gets to play.

Damnit, why couldn't it have been Engelland (and I don't wish injury on anyone, just an injury transferral).

Engelland has got to be the worst $3 mln+ signing in the NHL. The cap floor makes for some strange stuff.

I see the Flames as gapped more in the middle

1 - Giordano
2 - Brodie
3 - Russell
4 - please apply
5 - Wisdman
6 - Smid
7 - Engellend

Think of how much better the Flames would be if the bottom pairing was Smid and Wideman, with Wideman playing powerplay minutes as well.

And what could Russell do if he didn't have to prop the 2nd pairing?

Totally agree with this assessment. We'd get the best out of Wideman if he was sheltered on the 3rd pairing and anchoring the PP.

Potter could be a decent player for us. I suspect he would have outplayed Diaz for the 7th spot had he not been injured in camp.

The question is: who do we target as a good defence partner for Russell, and how much does he cost to acquire?

If Franson wasn't an impending UFA I would hope that we would try to acquire him. He's big, not a pylon, puts up decent offensive numbers & is the right side of 30.

Wideman has been better than Russell of late in my opinion. I think Russell is still hurting from whatever injury he had earlier in the year.
