As The Guardian reports, the Nazca lines "are huge figures depicting living creatures, stylized plants and imaginary figures scratched on the surface of the ground between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago." The figures, which can only be seen from the air, are believed to have had ritual functions related to astronomy.

The ground around the site is so sensitive and so sacred that Peru has even forbidden presidents and top officials to walk where the Greenpeace activists went. Peru's Deputy Culture Minister told the BBC: "You walk there, and the footprint is going to last hundreds or thousands of years." Tourists generally get to see the site from the air, or, on rare occasions, are equipped with special foot gear.

The group doesn't just come off as crass. By writing a message in English on a site belonging to a country that has three official languages that aren't English, the environmental group also managed to come across as thoughtless and ignorant. The message wasn't meant for the people of Peru, and yet the group still choose to desecrate an ancient monument to transmit it.

i've been to Nasca and seen the Nasca lines in first person. In a word they are remarkable. Truly one of history's most mysterious feats.

What Greenpeace did here was disgusting. I am truly and utterly disgusted.

Well, not really. They're sorry that there's moral outrage, but not sorry for doing it.

“We took every care we could to try and avoid any damage. We have 40 years of experience of doing peaceful protests,” Kyle Ash, Greenpeace spokesman, told the Guardian. “The surprise to us was that this resulted in some kind of moral offense. We definitely regret that and we want to figure out a way to resolve it. We are very remorseful for any offense that we’ve caused and we’re very remorseful for that.”

That's infuriating, ####### idiots.

The hummingbird, of all the ones to desecrate. It's the most famous, and best preserved one (or was), that's a train-wreck for Greenpeace. I sincerely hope these guys are caught before leaving, and get to experience the joy of Peruvian prison.

ive not seen a Peruvian jail, but I did go through a Bolivian jail on a crazy, weird tour sort of thing.

Not a good place unless you've got a pile of dough to buy yourself some security.

Hope that the Peruvian jails are similar to their southern neighbours.
