IMO, Grohl peaked with This Is A Call, a dynamic and exciting song. Then, he reverted to making good old reliable derivative music. I like it, it's just not groundbreaking, and he would say so himself.
Plenty of people can play all of their instruments on their songs. There is quite a few people in Calgary that can do that. That is a talent for sure. I reserve "genius" for artists that take music in a new direction.

I'll also very much disagree with your Album score. Ten is a great album but honestly I don't think it's their best. I'd say Vs and Vitology are both better. I also like Backspacer and Pearl Jam more. That is of course my opinion and you are welcome to yours. I'd also say the live performance to me is a key thing in evaluating the importance of a band and honestly Pearl Jam is second to none in that regard.
I've yet to see a live act that could hold a candle to David Lee Roth's Eat'Em & Smile live tour when he had Billy Sheehan on bass and Steve Vai on guitar. The most incredible instrumental solos I've ever seen in an arena and say what you want about Dave but he's an entertainer. Totally blew away Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, or any other act I saw in the 80's. Doesn't mean that was a great album.
Nothingman, Better Man, Corduroy, Immortality, Not for You, Spin the Black Circle. There is some filler in the album but not only 1-2 good songs either...

I like Alice in Chains (their new stuff is good, too) and Soundgarden more, but I still appreciate Pearl Jam. Nirvana is elevated above the others a little more because of Cobain's demise (yes, I know he had amazing talent).
THIS.
If we have to use the term "Grunge" to describe the music we're talking about, here are my Top 10 Grunge Bands
1. Alice In Chains
2. Soundgarden
3. Pearl Jam
4. Nirvana
5. Gruntruck
6. Mudhoney
7. Screaming Trees
8. Tad
9. Melvins
10. Skin Yard
11. My Sister's Machine
( I left out Green River and Mother Love Bone (who would be 3rd easily) because they evolved into Pearl Jam and Mudhoney.)

Vitalogy is a perfect example of what makes Pearl Jam terrible.
1/2 good to great songs and 13 terrible awful filler songs.
"Better Man" being the only good song on Vitalogy, though I remember they hilariously released "Spin the Black Circle" as the lead single. Laffo.
Better Man isn't even the best song on the album. I guess it was a Top 40 hit so there you go.
Corduroy, Not For You and Immortality are great songs.

Nope. Great album start to finish. All the quirky stuff is what makes it great too. I'm so glad bands choose to branch out from mid tempo "rawk" and actually start experimenting an getting creative. The more the mainstream gets alienated, the better.
An album full of Better Man's would've been the end of Pearl Jam (although I like the song). No better way to establish yourself as an adult contemporary borefest. They were way too creative to fall into that middle of the road trap.

The best non-Nirvana thing Dave Grohl was involved in was Songs for the Deaf, not even the Foo Fighters. Josh Homme is a much greater musical genius than Grohl is, not even close either. Kyuss is better than Smashing Pumpkins or Pearl Jam or the Foo Fighters.

Judging by this comment alone, I think I might know you IRL.
Haha, I've never heard anybody say the Rainbow Butt Monkeys added anything special to a lineup.
Treble Charger is awful as well. Only achieved a modicum of popularity because of Canadian content rules.
Sum 41 puts on a good show and I've seen Tool a few times, but never A Perfect Circle. I Mother Earth had a couple of good songs. Our Lady Peace was generally pretty bad, but had a few songs that would be fun live.
I saw Smashing Pumpkins at the dome in '95 or '96 during the Zero tour. It was a good enough show as far as Saddledome shows go, which isn't saying a lot. Man I have a hard time enjoying arena shows.
To each his own. Finger Eleven was one of the highlights to the day for me. This was right around Greyest of Blue Skies which was the last album of theirs that I overly enjoyed.
I agree that Treble Charger was getting off the rails at that point, but the years leading up to 2000 they had some good stuff.
My point wasn't necessarily that the bands were all awesome, but rather that that particular grouping of bands had an alarming level of staying power. I doubt we see many bands from this years X-Fest lineup in 2028.
My biggest regret was not fully appreciating or understanding the importance of A Perfect Circle. That's not exactly a band that rolls through town every summer.
I don't actually remember Corgan being a loser at the show. I'm not a big pumpkins fan and it was a very long day, so admittedly I don't even remember the set.

Songs for the Deaf is a masterpiece.

Nothing like a good old music debate for the condescending tones to come out.
I get it if you're not a fan of PJ, that's fine. Might not be for you. But couldn't be further from a mediocre band
20% of the band is a native Montanan too, which by definition, makes it impossible to be mediocre.

My favorite Tool album is Aenima which I really like but their other albums I could take it or leave it. Like Pearl Jam even though I really like some of their stuff I don't get the hype.

Well besides Psycnet, this has actually been a really great thread. I find myself out of touch with a lot of music discussion on this board, so this is great to discuss a bunch of bands I actually know and like.
