Any scotch drinkers dig into the first few selections of the advent calendar?
I haven't. Unfortunately I bought mine and afterwards started eating healthy. So the place I find myself is waiting until Saturday to sample the weeks selections... in other words my review will be that every Friday/Saturday selection is magical!

So you are samples 7 days worth in a night? I can't wait to read this review.

Sounds like a fantastic Friday and Saturday. Which calendar did you end up getting?
I bought the KWM myself and am curious to hear what was provided in the other offering if anybody is willing to summarize.

I have the KWM as well. I was joking about drinking 7 on a night though. I know that by the time I hit the 4-6th selections I would be too far gone to enjoy them!
For the others who are drinking Hibiki, where does it sit on that earlier chart that was circulating? What is a closer comparison similarities wise?
I'm about 40% left on my Hibiki 17, 60% left on a Macallan 10. My stomach isn't fighting at all and I'm excited! Looking to add a few bottles in and I'm interested in Lagavulin (thanks videos!) and perhaps Oban (Thanks videos again!).... But I can't justify the price when I'm blowing huge money at Christmas (69.99 and 99.99 at Costco). Maybe in January... we shall see.
Definitely thinking of adding a nice bottle of Alberta Premium to the stands in the meanwhile, but what do you think I should try next in terms of Similarities to Hibiki and/or should I try the Lagavulin?
I really liked the Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Smoky is good and the sweet aftertaste... delish. But the taste changed over time to something that was a bit more, meh (1.5-2 year? when stomach was fighting back). I actually started drinking VSOP when my stomach issues happened as it didn't upset my stomach and I'm excited to meander back to scotch/whiskey.
Hype aside, does anyone have any thoughts on Arbelour and Talisker? (Edit: Eliminated the other ones)
Finally, where does "peaty" go on that taste chart? Bottom against smoky?

I can only comment on the Laguvulin and Talisker, both being a favourite of mine.
Laguvulin is the smokiness whiskey I have ever tasted. It's rich almost oily, but it's flavour is so deliciously smokey.
Talisker is milder, and the smoke reminds me of that campfire smell you come with after a weekend of camping.
I'm still learning, not I'm not sure how correct this is, but I associate peaty and smokiness as closely tied together. Traditional whiskey requires peat moss to heat the grains. More peat added, the more smokey the whiskey gets. However, there is a bit of an iodine taste that gets added to the whiskey.
In my opinion, the opposite direction from smoke and peat, is the delicates, and whiskeys that fall under that direction are more subtle and floral in taste. I think they also tend to be sweeter, but that could also be the difference between light and rich plane.

I had the Laphroaig Triple Wood this weekend and it was great. I am not a huge fan of the quarter cask actually, but the Triple Wood was great and something that I will have again. Its definitely smoky and peaty if you like that kind of thing, and if you do I would definitely recommend it.

The 17 and 21 are on the chart in post #441.
21 lies right in the middle between GlenDronach 15 and Singleton 35 which are close on that chart....middle of the road smokey/delicate but right at the upper end of the rich axis.
17 doesn't have as close of a comparison but Cragganmore 12 looks the closest. Middle of the road smokey/delicate again and slight richness.

Thanks. I didn't realize there was a different chart. I was actually looking at the older one posted which wasn't as comprehensive. I enjoy the Hibiki 17, but I'm not looking to replace it. I'm looking to foray instead. I know I enjoy the Laphroaig QC and I'm looking at this new chart thinking I can use Talisker 10 ($83) and Highland Park 12 ($57 KWM) as gateway experiments towards Lagavulin.
If that direction isn't any good, I can recede and go towards Oban ($115 KWM)
Reasonable idea? I wouldn't buy overpriced of course. Just ball parking a price range. (Crikey these are pricey)
FYI: Glenlivit 15 is $44.95 at Solo Liquor and the 12 is $34.95. I believe the regular price for the 15 at Superstore might be about $55 (but don't quote me on this).

Glenlivit 15 is on for 41.99 at Sobeys
