JFC, Dion. This isn't rocket science. I still don't want a cat. My wife does.

I hope you have negotiated the right to name the cat.
One thing having a cat around that you're not 100% sold on but to give it a fighting chance it should have at least a name you can tolerate.

Yes if it's going to live in your house and you will ignore and have nothing to do with it why should it matter what cat they pick out. It's not your cat.

You don't want a cat and yet you want a say in what cat you get. Unless i'm missing something, why would you want a say when in reality you probably won't have anything to do with the cat?

To insure his family doesn't select any duds.

I have tunnel vision on a Sphinx cat named Sphincter, but my wife refuses to admit how awesome that is.

I guess you are missing a lot that most people would just sort of grasp intuitively.

The cat will live in my house. I don't want a long-haired shedding cat that caterwauls all the time; it would drive me nuts. That is but one example of why it's reasonable for me to have a say in the type of cat we get.

All cats shed to some extent and will leave hair everywhere. As for caterwauls, that problem can be fixed should it ever arise.

So it's safe to say you'll have a say in when to get rid of the cat when it gets annoying, amirite?

Or how about when the cat comes to him crying for attention and he ignores it. Watch the caterwauling increase.

Won't it get the message eventually?

Sorta like the first time you don't go to your kid when he cries in the middle of the night.

A good friend of mine has a cat and everytime I go to visit the cat cries for attention. I'm not cat lover due to all the hair and dander but found out over time that ignoring the cat didn't solve the problem. For the sake of the cat and not liking all the crying I gave the cat attention when it wanted it.

Further to your point, wouldn't it be confusing to the cat for the wife and the kids to give it attention and Sliver doesn't?

Every fiber of my being believes that Sliver should not get this cat.

However, I hope that if he does...that he loves it so much that he deletes all of his moronic anti-cat posts out of sheer embarrassment. Mia, my cat, agrees with me.

Wow. You really don't get it. A pet is not and should not be disposable. It is another living breathing life that is depending on you. It's not some toy or possession that you get rid of when you're tired of it. It's a responsibility that you obviously have no business taking on. You keep mentioning that it will not be your cat, but your wife and kids'. Does this mean in every respect? Will you feed the cat if they are not home? Will you give it away the first time it has an accident on the floor? If it has an emergency will you be driving it to the vet at 4am or will you tell your wife and kids "not my problem, you wanted the damn thing, not me."? Will you be willing to give it shots if it develops diabetes?

Think about this, these are things that can and will probably happen. You may say to yourself that it's not your pet, but unless you live in a completely separate reality it will fall upon you to help take care of it. You can't just wash your hands of responsibility and say "not mine".

Actually the cat may be attracted to Sliver for this very reason, if he doesn't pay attention to it, then the cat may see him as the non-threatening one in the household. The cat may gravitate to Sliver just because he is not the one that is picking it up, holding it, always trying to pet it etc.
