Your wife thought that it was a good idea to let the cat live on a leash in the garage.

As someone who just had to put down both our dog and cat within a 6 month period, and still miss them so, so much, I would very much agree.

I think you need to go back and read the post. We both decided a garage cat wouldn't work for us because we wouldn't want it on a leash in there because that wouldn't be fair to the cat.

First thing - the whole "garage cat" is not a thing. It never has been and never will be...why? Because you don't keep cats in one room just like you don't keep children in one room...especially not a garage. Second thing - the fact that either of you thought this was a good idea speaks volumes about either of your capability to own a pet.

Nope, still not a thing.

My garage is 576 square feet. That's bigger than some apartments that have perfectly happy cats living in them. But that doesn't even matter, anyway. My wife and I decided we weren't going to have a garage cat.

Really now. So what would you call a cat that lives in a garage?

  • A bad idea
  • A sad kitty
  • Property of a bad owner
  • On suicide watch
But these are just off the top of my head.

Well my aunt and uncle had a cat that lived in their garage that was awesome. Very happy animal, so I have seen a precedent. It just wouldn't work as well in the city and with us coming and going through the drive door in the garage. At my relatives' place, they didn't use their drive door.

Two things:
  1. How do you know it was happy?
  2. Awesome sample size.
PS: still not a thing.

I'm really looking forward to the thread 6 months from now when Sliver tells us he's looking for a place for his cat. I'm excited.

At what age do kids stop believing their pet "ran away"?

I think the only thing that should be living in a garage is Sliver.

Well, I guess I'm not going to get the help I asked for (a couple posters excepted), which was if anybody had any breed suggestions based on some specific criteria. Thanks anyway.
