I had no doubt that whoever replaced Heather would not be well received by the fanbase.
He certainly isn't the kind of voice to get the crowd jacked up but I've always hated waiting through the national anthems-just start the friggen game!

I really hope this was a tryout of sorts and she becomes the permanent singer, I always have to fast forward the anthem when Canyon sings because I just can't stand it
As mentioned here, the girls name is Annie. Her and her family have been friends of ours for years now. She's actually filled in a bunch of times in the past. Very talented girl and I was hoping she would take Heather's spot full-time, but she's also still in school. Last year when I was in the Philippines, I visited her family there and brought along some pictures of her singing the anthem in front of the whole arena. Her family was blown away and so proud of her.

I liked it. The anthems should be vanilla and even toned and that's what she did; only people with surreal talent like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion etc. can get away with any embellishment singing an anthem a cappella.

Personally I think it could be reduced somewhat. TV usually doesn't show the anthem for most of the hockey games anyway. If they just played the anthem for the country of the home team, that would be good enough.

George Canyon is a nice refreshing change from what we've had. His deep voice gives us a different style of singing the anthem.

I'm sorry but what? You think that Canyon sings the anthem straight? Annie sings it straight and I can understand people calling her boring (it's a very standard anthem) but Canyon is the complete opposite. His country drawl is ridiculously distinctive, there is no one in the league who sounds close to him lol.

I agree that's how the anthems should be sung; straight, plain and powerful. Canyon is none of these things.

This guy's fantastic! Would be awesome if Calgary brought in someone of a similar style. Would really get the fans and players going I think.

I think people have forgotten that anthem's were created during war and they are about national pride. They are designed to get everyone motivated and emotionally high. These players are going into battle and the last thing you want is a soft singing voice like George Canyon.

Exactly. Remember how pumped the crowd was after the anthem during the '04 run? I can't see that happening with Canyon crooning away

Wayne Messmer was the best anthem singer ever.

Every other one we've had in recent years was even softer.

I agree with others, a guy like Chicago's would be great.

I was always envious of Kate Smith and her rendition of "God bless America" at the old Flyers games.

Sends chills watching it. I would love it if we could have this effect on our crowd before games...

This was my favorite anthem rendition, even if it was football. Ann Wilson's got some pipes!

Yes, he does. You may not like his voice, but that is at least a more honest statement than "he's boring, she's not".

I Like George, he is a good singer and he just sings the Anthem. Nothing special, which is just perfect for me.

Haven't been to a roughnecks games in 3 or 4 years so I can't really comment on Annie, I heard the tail end of it on the radio yesterday, but honestly it didn't even click that George was MIA for this game.

George sings the anthem in a very straightforward manner, but the country-ness still shines through in the way he does it. Not a fan.
