Well, I fought the good fight for many months, but I've succumbed to familial pressure and we are officially cat shopping. Don't fear, this won't be my cat - it'll be my wife and kids' pet.
We will give it a good home and all involved are aware and accepting of the fact that I have the option of having nothing to do with it if I choose. I think it could be good for the kids to grow up with a pet, which is why I'm willing to let this happen.
Fortunately, I have the right to veto any cat options and I also have the right to name my preferred cat qualities. So, to the point of this thread, any cat experts have any breed recommendations based on the following criteria?
minimal shedding
non-vocal (I don't know if you can 'de-bark' a cat like you can a dog, and but I'd rather just start with a quiet cat and not have to worry about it)
funny looking - I don't want a generic tabby or whatever. I want a hairless cat, or one with hilariously stubby legs, or a smushed face or something...anything to give it some character
small - I like kittens a lot more than cats, so I think I'll be happier with a smaller-than-average cat
chill personality - I prefer a lazy adult cat (I don't mind an energetic kitten, though)
That's about all I can think of for now. I don't mind paying a few bucks if I need to get a purebred. I definitely don't want one from the SPCA because they just seem a bit gross to me. Breeder or private sale is my preference.
The humane society is the best place to get a cat. You can never tell what a cat will be like as an adult when they're a kitten, so get one of the adult cats. Kittens are much easier for the humane society to adopt, so you would be doing them a favour and the adoption fees are lower for adult cats.

Was recently at the Humane Society. They have a cat there with a stubbed tail. It was about an inch long. Short haired, 4 year old cat that might be a fit for ya.
I was dead set against getting a cat. I didn't want one, no way, no how. My (then) fiancé (now wife) desperately wanted a cat. So we compromised and got a cat.
Turns out our cat is awesome. She's not very vocal, but does meow when you see her first thing in the morning. She stops what she's doing to watch sports (loves hockey and baseball, is memorized by the puck). She's also very sooky when things are bad which is nice (she followed my wife and cuddled with her contantly after my father in law's heart attack).
If you get a good cat, they are awesome. I love my cat just like I loved my childhood dog.

I was dead set against getting a cat. I didn't want one, no way, no how. My (then) fiancé (now wife) desperately wanted a cat. So we compromised and got a cat.
I'm not sure how that worked out so well for her. You must be leaving out important details about the actual compromise.
