I want to watch the game and avoid American Idol/Bleeding Gums Murphy extension of the song. Do it on key and swiftly, respectfully too, but get on with the game
No to Jim Cornelison like, Chicago already has someone like him and no need to rinse and repeat
Just someone that can hold a note and sing.... and not limited. Get on and get out while doing it with with respect, people say they would love to duplicate what Chicago has but lets be honest with ourselves it's not like we bring the noise.... The echo would throw Jim off here without that wall of sound surround

Amazing how we all hear things differently. I loved Heather Liscano - on key, no dramatics, good pace. I also like George Canyon. Great voice and very easy on the eye! The girl last night I thought was terrible. She sounded very nervous and wobbly. I started to cheer before the end of the anthem because I wanted to drown her out
I like Annie Pattison, but if you think George Canyon's version is boring and hers isn't, then your anti-country bias is showing just a little too much. Both of them sing the anthem straight and fairly plain. Honestly, that is how anthems should be sung.

I'm just curious, does anyone even care that they play the anthem before hand?
I could do with a lot less anthems, for sure. It's nothing to do with my patriotism, just that the more I hear an anthem (or any song) the less impact is has on me. Hearing it every four years at the Olympics in recognition of a fellow Canadian's accomplishment usually makes me leak a few Canadian man-tears.
Re: Canyon - Usually I PVR the game and so far I've never been able to sit through his anthems. Like a previous poster, I also loathe country music. Country music, and ABBA....
I don't like Canyon as the anthem singer. I wasn't so sure at first but after more than a few games I think he would be OK to sing it one night at the Stampede rodeo but not every night at the Flames game.
I wasn't meaning a negative on the thread. I like the debate, and am hoping for a different singer next year.
To answer the question in a less snippy tone.. Yes I do check into games just to see the anthem and once done and move onto the game I'll rather watch. There's a few singer's I tune to any chance I get to hear their rendition and often do youtube searches for versions I missed.
I normally get upset with broadcast that don't show that anthems and replace it with nonsense and gab that they just repeat over and over throughout the broadcast
I find there's many times when anthems singers being discussed that don't give a crap, you also get a few member that state that why does anyone even care and let us know they don't. That's cool, if it's not their thing no problem but just because they don't care it doesn't mean other can.
I understand why the Flames hired George, not my cup. I wish him all the best and hope he has a great time and this boost his career but I look forward till the Flames go less gimmicky and go another direction as well

The anthem (country) and goal song (not distinctive) have gone in the wrong direction but the Flames are going in the right direction so I don't care that much.

I absolutely 100% positively hate (with an extreme passion) country music. God awful. So I didn't like him to begin with.
But even my friends who love country music thinks he sucks.
When people who love country music (which vocally sounds pretty much the exact same) thinks he sucks, he probably sucks.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I think the fact that lots of country fans dislike him speaks volumes.
Sorry to rant, but my hatred of country music runs as deep as my hatred for the Oilers. I think you all get the point.
Canyon, even for country music, is NO GOOD.
I don't listen to country music either, and don't think I've ever heard one of his songs. But as far as the anthems go, he does a good job. I was afraid he was going to put a country spin on the anthem, and his first couple nights he didn't sound too good, but lately he's done a great job.
I don't like George's voice, but I understand it's a matter of taste. What ISN'T a matter of taste is simply getting the words correct, and he has decided that his words are "in all our sons command" instead of "in all thy sons command". Sure, one word is antiquated, but "our" has essentially the opposite meaning to "thy".
WRGMG, I guess.
