Nobody has ever missed the playoffs with 96, as I said.

On top of that, we know they're going to have more OT and SO losses before the season is over. If they have 47 wins, they're pretty much certain to get enough loser points to bring them up to 100 – which puts them in the playoffs easily.

Your calculations are off.
Umm, 47 wins and no other points is 94....

He said 96 because he included the 2 OTL/SOL points we already have.

I will be content with 3 points over the 3 game road trip.

Possibly an even bigger series than the one just gone because we have 5 of our divisional rivals to play. Well, 2 of them twice, but you get my drift.

Some winnable games in there. Hopefully get 6-8 points from the games v Arizona, Colorado and New Jersey, then whatever we can from the 3 games against the California teams.
Besides Anaheim this series should be a slam dunk win for the Flames. Normally I would be worried about the Sharks but the they just lost their last 3 games to the lowly Sabres, Panthers and Coyotes.

I'm really unsure why, as soon as we reach 4 wins, we roll over a series. For me it shouldn't work like that. Hrudey and Ball tonight once again mentioned Hartley and his 7 game break downs and I'm pretty sure he sticks to each 7 game segment, regardless of how soon we win each series.

For me, we are 4-1 up in the 4th series with the Avs and Sharks to finish off the 7 games. THEN, we roll over into the new series.

I see no reason why we can't target maximum points out of the next 2 games as well. The Avs are struggling and if we play to our best, we can knock off the Sharks.

We win another series in 6 games and the Avalanche game counts against the next series.
Congrats on calling it. perfect 6 for 6 so far.

We sweep this series, next series starts again with Pittsburgh.

Yes and I do realize that I'm basically saying the Flames go on a 9 game winning streak.

I don't think the point is to lose when we have won the series, nor will the coach treat the next game any differently. The point is to moderate the emotional ups and downs by breaking the season into segments so that if they get on a bad streak they have motivation to still try to win the series or to improve their overall series record so that a long term view of things minimizes the emotional swings but doesn't put too much pressure by focusing on the end goal all the time (playoffs and ultimately a championship).

Focus too short (on a game per game basis) and they'll get devastated losing tough battles, focus too far ahead (on the playoffs) and any bad luck will make them worry too much about mistakes and feel too much pressure.

FWIW, an article on the Flames site suggests each "series" in Hartley's method is 7 games, regardless of whether the Flames win or lose 4 games early in the segment.

“We keep going,” Hartley said. “Our vision of this is we have a good segment, were going to use the positive or were going to use the confidence that we built in that segment but we start back at zero. If ever we have a bad segment, it goes right to the garbage. Short-term goals, we don’t keep anything negative over here. We learn from it and we move on.

I originally started with a hard 7 and was basically asked to go to this method.

I kind of like this because its more like a playoff series, and the other way I guess I look at it is if the Flames finish a series early, the additional games are better going into a new series because once the Flames take a series the addtional games can't tie a series.

It does make personal analytics a bit harder unless you go to percentages for things like gf and ga instead of the hard numbers.

Well in my mind, we've just completed the 4th 7 game series, which we won 5-2. However, in that series were a SO win v New Jersey, 2 wins over the Coyotes and beating the Avs. I think its fair to say that that series was favourable for most teams.

These next 7 will be incredibly tough.

@Leafs - L
@Sabres - W
@Penguins - L
@Blackhawks - L
Rangers - W
Stars - W
@Canucks - L

Think we could well go on a little skid here. The Leafs are winnable, hopeful for a point out of that one. Sabres "should" be a win, although other than the Tampa game the other day, they aren't lying down for many teams at the moment.

Pens are an odd one, losing horribly one night then winning the next. Could go either way that one. We can't knock off the Hawks twice in their own building twice in one season can we? Might need Jonas back for that one. Rangers and Stars, both of those teams are pretty poor on the road, so hopeful for 2-3 points out of those 2. And then the blinking Canucks. I really really really hope we can knock them off in their own barn, would be amazing.

If we can somehow win this series, I be chuffed. Wins against the Leafs, Sabres, Rangers and Stars is realistic I think. Be interesting to see how we get on.

It's your thing. Structure it how ever the heck you want. Nice Thread BTW.

The only problem I have with this thread doing it differently than Hartley is that he sometimes references the 7 game breakdowns in his post game interviews. It is a little strange if he is talking about one thing and this thread is recording things in a totally different manner. This thread is basically out of sync with how the players themselves are thinking about the season. Just seems odd.

All the same, it is neat to track this as the season goes along so thanks.

I like structuring it in 7-game blocks because then any points over and above 8 in any 7-game block is like a bonus/cushion point.

If the Flames break the season down into eleven 7-game blocks (and one 5-game block), and go 4-3 (and 3-2) in those blocks, that's 94 points. Is that enough to get into the playoffs? Probably. Last year 91 points got in. But bonus/cushion points will help the cause.

So thus far I view it as though we've just finished our forth 7-game series.

4-3-0
4-1-2
4-3-0
5-2-0

So we're 4 points ahead of our desired pace so far.

So the Flames get swept in series 6 and get a win at LA to go up 1-0 in series 7.
