I think Bennett will turn into a great player but something about the whole injury update press conference and questioning from the media rub me the wrong way. Let the kid recover, develop and break into the league on his own timeline. Maybe I'm just not used to the hype that goes along with a top 5 pick but I would prefer he gets treated the same way every other prospect in the system does. I don't remember Klimchuk or Poirier having to answer a bunch of questions about their injuries to start the season and how they compare to Gaudreau or Monahan.

Well the difference is that Klimchuk and Poirier weren't hanging around the Saddledome on a daily basis.
The media probably put in multiple requests to talk to him and instead of having to do individual interviews with each request they just had an availability were everyone could ask their questions.

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Sam Bennett coming off shoulder surgery: "I’m really happy with the progress so far. I’ve got about a solid month now, of solid rehab."
Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Bennett (cont): "I'm starting to do some strength work now and really I haven’t had any issues so it’s all positive right now."
Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Hartley on Bennett: "If we would listen to him, if he were skating with us, he’d be playing right now."
Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Hartley on Bennett (cont): "He’s chomping at the bit, at a point where he’s almost annoying.”

You know if the Oilers had drafted him there's zero doubt he would be on the ice and cutting his NHL career short by the day

It's almost uncanny just how "Flames Hockey" Bennett actually is. He is pretty much Hartley hockey incarnate. Can't wait to see him tearing it up on the Flames.
I don't think anyone is ever going to have to tell Sam Bennett to be happy playing in the nhl.

Good point about being around the Saddledome during his rehab and needing to address the media. I just see what is happening in Edmonton with the media hype around their top picks before they ever proved themselves and I think it was detrimental. Not saying we are even close to their situation right now but sometimes I wonder if the pressure in Canadian markets makes it tougher for top young draft picks to develop.

It's not even a hypothetical:

I wasn’t even ready to play when I came here, but it was like, ‘We signed you, you go out and play.’ I hadn’t been cleared to play yet, but I was being questioned by the organization:‘When are you going to be able to play?’
...
Souray said it wasn’t the training staff applying the pressure; it was "management."
...
"I got challenged by management on the very first day of my first training camp. The very first day," he said. "They said, ‘When are you going to play?’ I said, ‘I have a six month (shoulder) injury and I’m at five months.’ But I played.

The Sedins, Spezza, Karlsson, Subban, Pacioretty, Monahan and Riely recently..
I don't think the pressure of playing in Canadian markets is the reason for past failures, it has more to do with drafting properly and developing properly more than anything. Injuries, and a proper rehab, will affect things as well..

I'm very curious to see what number he wears when he is a full-time NHLer. A lot of people have suggested Gilmour's 39 but if Burke sticks with the 1-35 mandate what do people think he'll wear?

My only guess is 10. That's the number he wore when he played for Team Canada at the U18s.

Considering 9 and 30 are retired, and 12 and 34 will be retired soon, Burke simply can't enforce that rule.
Give him 39 at least, but I would prefer 93.

Among the gems in this article (and can certainly go in the Oilers thread)
They’ve driven this squad to the lowest point in the history of the franchise, signed a long series of albatross contracts, and generally made miscalculation after miscalculation.
They’ve also alienated enough players that something like this was bound to happen eventually.
Not quite the lowest point...this article was written in 2010.

I hope he's getting good advice from doctors and that the same doctors are advising the Flames directly as to how Bennett's health is progressing. I'm glad he says he has no issues and eager, but left to his own devices he'd still be playing hockey somewhere instead of getting his shoulder addressed.

For me that quote above seemed right up there with saying "I sure hope the surgeon washed his hands before preforming the surgery".
Of course he's getting advice from the Team Doctors who are obviously monitoring he and his rehab very closely and absolutely keeping the Flames staff advised. Honestly, some of the things people worry about are astounding.

No kidding. Porier too, I see as embodying the flames culture that has been fostered over the last two seasons.
I honestly didn't realize how much I should value attitude, intensity, and work ethic in a prospect until watching this year's batch of rookies define the flames. I have no issues waiting for these two kids in particular to develop their hands, hockey minds and leg speed, because their heart is surely there, and as we've seen in other no-good teams - that's the most unpredictable aspect of a prospect's development. These two guys will eventually fit right into the locker room like a glove, and probably sooner rather than later.
