Default Moose on the Loose... at Marlborough Mall

Quote:
Police have confirmed one moose was euthanized and a second remains on the loose in northeast Calgary Friday.

“They were very mobile and agitated,” said Brendan Cox, public affairs officer with the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General department. “There were a couple of fairly close calls … with a moose getting close to people in the area.”

Det. Jody Cross said police first located a moose wandering the streets of a northeast neighbourhood at about 5:30 a.m. Staying inside the cruiser, they followed it as it made it’s way to Malborough Mall.

Fish and Wildlife officers attempted to tranquilize the moose, but were unsuccessful. It ended up in a Malborough backyard where it was shot.

“Unfortunately it was put down, our officers certainly had a tough decision to make in this circumstance, but they did have to make it quickly,” Cox said.

The second moose, which is still “on the loose,” was last seen running up and down the train tracks in the 600 block of 17th Avenue SE.

“It’s certainly our hope that the second one can be tranquilized successfully,” Cox said.

Crappy. I had never really seen a moose really up close and personal until we had a couple walking through our yard a couple weeks ago, but man are they impressive creatures. I not really sure what the danger to the public would have been to make such a hasty decision, but I guess these people know better than me.

Moose are incredibly strong and can do some serious damage. That's not even taking into consideration that if you hit them with your car it's pretty much game over for everybody involved.

A scared, aggressive moose could kill a human very easily. If it has its big antlers it could beat a group of humans to death in seconds (my uncles brother and his girlfriend were beaten to death by a thrashing moose in the 80's). This would be almost as bad as having a bear roaming around the parking lot with people.

My brother frequently goes on back-country hiking trips and he's always far more nervous of Moose than he is of bears.

Aren't more people injured from moose than bears?

Regardless, they sure are delicious creatures

I've never really understood why they would even try to sedate an animal like a moose. For how rare the instance of a moose in an urban setting is it doesn't make sense.

There are thousands of tags issues every year in Alberta for people to hunt Moose. Why would you waste resources to sedate, relocate, track etc. Just shoot the thing, get it butchered and donate it to the local food bank.

And for the record, as someone mentioned above, moose are very dangerous when agitated. Cow moose are worse, especially if you inadvertently get between them and their calf.

Why don't we just exterminate all moose?

I think it's mostly because they don't want to discharge high powered rifles in an urban setting, whereever possible they will sedate and re-locate animals, predatory or not

As a side question...does anyone know what will happen to the animal now ?

Donated to charity...disposed of...sold etc...?

That's a lot of good meat going to waste unless they have a plan.

Interesting. It's not like that's the Balzac mall, how did they get there without being seen/tracked down.

Well it's Marlborough. Got loaded into a nearby residents rusted out Dodge Ram. Problem solved.

Your uncle's brother? Isn't that still your uncle?

Not necessarily.

His 'biological' aunt has a husband, his uncle, and that man has a brother who is of no real relation.
